A cold trap for the removal of a component from a gas mixture includes a cooling coil, made up of cooling sections of highly thermally conductive material and intermediate sections of low thermal conductivity, and a heating coil arranged for controlling the inlet temperature to equal the saturation temperature of that component in the gas mixture, its outlet temperature to equal the saturation temperature at a desired residual concentration of the component in the mixture and the temperature of cooling surfaces between the inlet and the outlet at a temperature which substantially falls linearly from the inlet temperature to the outlet temperature. The cooling surfaces extend generally perpendicular to the principal gas flow direction and the residence time of the gas is comparatively large so that the gas is practically at the temperature of the cooling surfaces at all times and nucleation in the gas spaces which might lead to obstruction of the flow passages is precluded.

An Euler's goniometer for low-temperature diffractometry is rotatable about two turning circles and is arranged within a chamber filled with a coolant. Each of the turning circles - that is the chi-circle and the phi-circle - is constituted by a worm wheel which is driven in a stepwise manner by a worm and a stepper motor driving the worm. For providing a compact construction, the stepper motors and the actuated worms are arranged within the chamber as well.

A sampling unit, especially for stratospheric air sampling when carried aloft by balloon or another vehicle, comprises a liquid coolant reservoir within an evacuated vessel and provided with a cryogenically cooled adsorber for maintaining the vacuum. Nozzles in the vessel wall can be selectively opened and closed to allow samples to be drawn over cooled fingers on which components of the sample are frozen or sublimed. A vacuum gate can be connected to the device for removal of the cold fingers for transfer to a spectrometer.

A double-wall vessel has its inner walls spaced from the outer wall by a plurality of insulating spacers, each of which includes a thread stud affixed to one of the walls and reaching toward the other, the length of the stud being greater than the spacing tolerance of the vessel. On each thread stud is screwed a support body of thermally insulating material and arranged such that, wherein the body is screwed fully onto its stud, its maximum distance from the wall on which the stud is mounted is not greater than the minimum spacing between the two walls.
