The present invention relates to an aqueous dispersion obtained by a process comprising the steps of (a) preparing an acidic copolymer (A) by radical copolymerization of monomers comprising: (a1) at least one unsaturated fatty acid, (a2) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least one acid group or group capable of forming an acid group, (a3) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from (a1) and (a2), (b) neutralizing totally or partially the acid groups of copolymer (A) and dissolving it in water, (c) copolymerizing in the solution obtained at step (b) a monomer mixture different from the monomer mixture of step (a) to form a copolymer (B) as well as blends based on such dispersions, especially in combination with oxidatively drying alkyds.

Aqueous dispersions

Modified water-borne alkyd resin

This invention relates to aminoplast crosslinker resins compositions based on at least partially alkylated reaction products A of melamine, formaldehyde and an alkanol with the following parameters: the ratio of the amount of substance n(CHO) of combined formaldehyde to the amount of substance n(Mel) of melamine is in the range of from 5.6 mol/mol to 6.2 mol/mol, the ratio of the amount of substance n(RO) of alkyl ether groups in the crosslinker resin to the amount of substance n(Mel) of melamine is in the range of from 5.0 mol/mol to 5.6 mol/mol, the mass fraction of monomer in the resin, calculated as the ratio of the mass of monomer m(1) to the mass m(A) of the reaction products A is between 35% and 55%, to a process for their preparation, and to a method of use thereof as crosslinker in combination with hydroxy-functional polymers for coating of heat-sensitive substrates.

Aqueous binders for coatings with improved gloss

The invention relates to hydroxyl-functional binder components ABC containing a linear or branched main chain having a polymethylene structure &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014; or a polyester structure or a structure derived from the fatty acid esters of glycerin or other polyvalent alcohols. The invention is characterized in that said components have grafted cyclic imide structures on the main chain, wherein the imide-nitrogen atom is substituted by a hydroxyalkyl group or a hydroxyalkyl-aryl group. The invention also relates to method for the production of said components by reacting oleofinically unsaturated acid anhydrides B and hydroxyamines C and to the utilization of the inventive components for the formulation of binders.

Viscosity-stabilized aqueous polyester dispersions comprising an acid-functional polyester resin a, neutralizing agent b for the polyester resin a, the amount of neutralizing agent being sufficient to convert from 10 to 200% of the amount of substance of acid groups in the polyester resin a into salt groups by means of the amount of neutralizing agents added, the neutralizing agents being selected from ammonia and organic amines and also alkali metal hydroxides and alkaline earth metal hydroxides; if desired, an organic auxiliary solvent, silica in an amount such that the mass of SiO.sub.2 is from 0.1 to 50% of the mass of the polyester resin, and water.
