The invention relates, generally, to porous absorbent materials which are suitable for packing antrums or other cavities of the human or animal body. More particularly, it relates to hydrophilic biodegradable foams, which may be used e.g. in the form of a plug or tampon, for instance for controlling bleeding, wound closure, prevent tissue adhesion and/or support tissue regeneration. The invention provides an absorbent foam, suitable for packing antrums or other cavities of the human or animal body, comprising a biodegradable synthetic polymer, which polymer preferably comprises —C(O)—O—groups in the backbone of the polymer, for instance polyurethane and/or polyester units combined with polyethers.

Biomedical foams

The invention is directed to biodegradable, thermoplastic, phase separated segmented multi-block copolymers. The copolymers of the present invention find use in various biomedical applications as well as in pharmaceutical applications. Provided is a composition for the controlled release of at least one biologically active polypeptide to a host, comprising the at least one biologically active polypeptide encapsulated in a matrix comprising at least one phase separated, thermoplastic multi-block copolymer, the copolymer being characterized in that (i) it comprises at least two hydrolysable segments chosen from prepolymer (A) and prepolymer (B), prepolymer (A) having a Tg lower than 37&#xb0; C. and prepolymer (B) having a Tm of 40&#xb0; C.-100&#xb0; C. under physiological conditions; (ii) the segments being linked by a multifunctional chain-extender; (iii) the segments are randomly distributed over the polymer chain; and (iv) prepolymer (A) contains a segment that is derived from a water soluble polymer.

Biodegradable phase separated segmented multi block co-polymers and release of biologically active polypeptides

The invention relates, generally, to medical appliances. More particularly, it relates to tubular shaped devices used as drains for draining fluids (liquids and/or gases) from antrums or other parts of the human or animal body. According to the present invention a drain is provided, which is suitable for draining a human or animal antrum, which drain comprises a synthetic biodegradable material, preferably a biodegradable polymer.

Biodegradable drains for medical applications

The invention relates to medical devices, in particular condoms/drains, that find use in anastomosis. Thus the present invention relates to these medical devices per se, to a medical kit comprising these medical devices, to the use of these medical devices, to a method for medical treatment involving application of these medical devices to an organism who is in need thereof as well as to the use of certain biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic polymers in the preparation of a medical device for the treatment of a disease or a condition which requires anastomosis. The medical devices of the present invention are typically condom shaped and are used for the protection of anastomosis. The devices comprise a tubular shaped part which is made of a biocompatible, biodegradable polymer. The devices may be applied by stapling.
