A device is provided for winding paper in which the paper web running is supported by a reel drum and wound onto exchangeable reel shafts in contact with the reel drum in order to form rolls of paper. The device applies a heated adhesive agent on the web and/or on the reel shaft onto which the web is to be wound. A spray rack is mounted on the stand of the reel-up, upstream of the reel drum and extending transversely to the machine direction, or alternatively, is mounted in various other locations of the reel-up. A hopper with a heater heats the heated adhesive agent to temporarily lower its viscosity and stickiness for smooth and even spraying. A series of nozzles are mounted on the rack spaced across the width of the web to spread spray jets of liquid containing said heated adhesive onto the web and/or the reel shaft. The adhesive area thus is disposed between the web and the empty reel shaft so as to facilitate initiating the winding process.

A creped tissue paper is made by creping a tissue paper from a drying cylinder with a creping doctor, receiving the creped web on a carrying fabric, carrying the creped web on the carrying fabric through a compression nip that compresses the web to substantially reduce its thickness and improve softness of the web, and carrying the creped, compressed web on the carrying fabric or a subsequent fabric to a reel-up.

Method and apparatus for making a creped tissue with improved tactile qualities while improving handling of the web

A method is provided for switching reels in a paper machine that includes applying an adhesive onto a continuously running paper web to begin a new paper roll and severing the continuous paper web from the tail end of the newly completed roll. The running paper web is supported by a reel drum and wound onto exchangeable reel shafts in contact with the reel drum in order to form rolls of paper. A hopper with a heater heats an adhesive agent to temporarily lower its viscosity and stickiness for smooth and even applying. A pair of nozzles, mounted on a pair of rodless cylinders and translating therewith, spray jets containing said adhesive onto the web and/or the reel shaft. The web is then advanced onto the reel shaft thereby forming an adhesive interface between the web and the shaft. Tension is applied across the adhesive interface to sever the paper web at the adhesive interface, thereby separating the trailing end of the paper web of the previously completed roll from the current paper roll.
