A method is provided for damping electromechanical oscillations in an electromechanical system including at least one electric machine operable with an angular speed and a phase of the angular speed being coupled to at least one torque load and producing an electromotive force. The method includes deriving actual values of the electromotive force and adjusting the phase of the angular speed, based on the derived actual values of the electromotive force, in a direction in which an oscillatory behavior of the electric machine is reduced.

Method for damping electromechanical oscillations in an electromechanical system and oscillation damping system for employing such method

The present disclosure is concerned with the combined voltage or power flow control and damping of electromechanical oscillations in an electric power system by Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices or High Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission devices. To this end, information about a state or operating point of the power system is generated from suitable second system signals (y) and a control parameter (cp) of a FACTS controller is derived therefrom. The control parameter and a first system signal (y) are used in the calculation of a control command (u) defining the settings of the FACTS device. Following a change in the state of the power system such as a change in the topology of a transmission network, poorly damped or even unstable oscillations are avoided by appropriate re-tuning of the control parameter of the damping or stabilizing equipment.

Damping electromechanical oscillations in power systems

A voltage source converter for high power application containing a plurality of valves, each valve containing a plurality of extinguishable semiconducting elements, and a valve control unit containing a computer and a pulse-width modulator providing an executing control signal for controlling the semiconducting elements. The valve control unit includes a first control containing a first pulse-width modulator for providing a first pulse-width modulation signal, a second control containing a second pulse-width modulator for providing, a second pulse-width modulation signal, a mode detector, and a selector connected to the first and second pulse-width modulator for selecting in dependence of the mode detector the executing pulse-width modulation signal.
