Phacoemulsification energy setpoints may be recorded over different periods of time, such as during current cases and over a lifetime of cases. The recorded data would then be used to determine future phacoemulsification energy setting amounts.

A method and system provide a surgical system including a cassette, a console and an interferometric pressure sensing system coupled with the console. The cassette is for exchanging material with a patient and includes a wall and a reflector. The wall undergoes a deflection in response to a nonambient internal cassette pressure. The console is coupled with the cassette. The interferometric pressure sensing system is coupled with the console. The interferometric pressure sensing system includes a light source and a detector. The light source provides a first portion of light that is reflected off of the reflector and a second portion of light that bypasses the reflector. The first portion and the second portion of light are recombined to form an interference pattern. The deflection corresponds to a shift in the interference pattern detectable by the detector.

Disclosed is a surgical footswitch, comprising a base, a pedal mounted to the base, and a variable air capacitor mechanically coupled to the pedal, such that movement of the pedal is operative to vary the capacitance of the variable air capacitor. The footswitch further comprises a capacitance-sensing controller circuit electrically connected to the variable air capacitor and configured to measure a capacitance of the variable air capacitor and to produce a control signal based on the measured capacitance, such that the control signal reflects a position of the pedal or a change in the position of the pedal, and a wireless interface electrically connected to the capacitance-sensing controller circuit and configured to wirelessly relay the control signal to a surgical console.

An ophthalmic surgical system comprises: a camera optically coupled to a surgical microscope; a virtual reality (VR) headset worn by a surgeon; and a VR data processing unit configured to communicate with the surgical microscope, the VR headset, and an ophthalmic surgical apparatus, wherein the VR data processing unit is configured to: project a real time video screen of video received from the camera into the VR headset; project a patient information screen into the VR headset to provide the patient information directly to the surgeon during ophthalmic surgery; project a surgical apparatus information screen into the VR headset; project a surgical apparatus input control screen into the VR headset to provide the surgeon with direct control over the surgical apparatus; and control which ones of the screens are visible in the VR headset based inputs indicating head movements of the surgeon as detected by the VR headset.

Embodiments of the present invention may allow each of the surgical steps of a surgical procedure to be defined and associated with a function of the surgical console using a GUI. The defined surgical procedure can then be saved and later invoked by a user of the surgical console to conduct the surgical procedure. When the saved surgical procedure is invoked representations of the defined surgical steps are displayed to the user using a GUI so the user can conduct the surgical procedure by navigating through the representations of the surgical steps such that when a representation of a surgical step is selected the surgical console is configured according to the functionality associated with that surgical step.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for allowing a user to modify a surgical procedure. An embodiment of the method of the present invention can include: providing a GUI on a touch screen of a surgical console, said GUI comprising a representation of the surgical procedure and representations of one or more surgical steps, wherein the GUI allows a user to modify the representation of the surgical procedure by dragging and dropping representations of surgical steps using the touch screen; detecting that the representation of the surgical procedure has been modified; and modifying the surgical procedure to correspond to the modified representation of the surgical procedure.

System and method for identifying a component, such as an optical probe or pneumatic scissors, of an ophthalmic surgical device. A component of a surgical device includes an identifier, such as a RFID tag. Data from the RFID tag is transmitted to a RFID reader in the device. A controller determines whether the component corresponding to the received data is operable with the surgical device based on criteria, such as whether the received data is an authorized code that matches data stored in memory or whether the received data solves or satisfies an algorithm. The authorized codes are selected from a larger set of available codes. The controller enables or disables the operation of the device with the component based on whether the criteria is satisfied, the number of uses of the component, an amount of time that has passed since the component has been used, or a geographic location. The RFID data can also be used to calibrate the surgical device for use with the particular component and for inventory and monitoring purposes.
