A method and apparatus for sorting is described, and which includes an arrangement for controllably and operably coupling to a controller, and then selectively energizing each of a background element; laser scanner; first and second electromagnetic radiation detectors; line scan imaging assembly; and selectively energizable radiators, so as to improve the detection of individual products and/or other objects of interest forming a product stream by increasing the contrast of the respective products or specific characteristics thereof, and/or objects of interest in a multiplicity of electrical signals which are received, and then processed by the controller, as the product stream passes through an inspection station.

An object detection apparatus is described and which includes an image capturing device; a source of electromagnetic radiation which is directed towards and reflected from an object passing through a field of view; a background located in spaced relation relative to the image capturing device, and wherein the field of view is located between the image capturing device and the background; and an electromagnetic radiation detector is positioned in electromagnetic receiving relation relative to the background and which is operable to generate a signal which indicates the presence of an object passing through the field of view.

An apparatus and method for selectively removing or sorting undesirable articles wherein a product stream is transported by a conveyor, and then interrogated by an optical scanner and sorting processor to inspect and label the articles according to user specified criteria. Articles labeled or classified as undesirable articles are removed by an ejector or removal station while desirable or acceptable articles are passed.

Apparatus and method for sorting articles

An apparatus for classifying articles may include a frame connected to (1) transport means for directing articles to create a product stream, (2) an emitter section having a radiation source and (3) a detection section for detecting a portion of radiation reflected by articles. The detection section may include first detection means for converting radiant power of reflected radiation having a first polarization state into a first electrical signal, second detection means for converting radiant power of reflected radiation having a second polarization state into a second electrical signal, and third detection means for converting radiant power of reflected radiation into a third electrical signal. Control circuitry, which may receive the electrical signals, may include decision means for generating a selection signal. Selection means may separate an article from the product stream according to the received selection signal from the control circuitry.
