The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a roller bearing comprising a cage made from a thermoplastic polymer-containing material. By cross-linking the polymeric material its properties, such as form retention and compatibility with lubricants, are improved. A roller bearing provided with a cage made from suitably cross-linked thermoplastic polymer-containing material can be used even at temperatures above the melting point of the polymer. According to the invention a roller bearing is manufactured by forming a cage from thermoplastic polymer-containing material, providing it with rotating bodies and only then cross-linking the material. This avoids damage to an otherwise already rigid cage during the insertion of the rotating bodies.

Method of manufacturing a roller bearing

A rolling bearing comprises an inner race and an outer race which together enclose a bearing space in which rolling elements are accommodated, which bearing space is sealed off by means of seals fixed on the outer race. In order to prevent oil leakage, provision is made for the fastening between each seal and the outer race to be liquid-tight. The outer race can comprise at least one groove in which a seal is accommodated, while an elastic shut-off element can be provided, which shut-off element is accommodated in the groove.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a seal for a roller bearing, for instance a ball bearing. The seal according to the invention is formed from a thermoplastic polymer-containing material which is subsequently cross-linked under the influence of radiation, for example .beta.-radiation. This allows the use of seals manufactured according to the invention at near or even above the melting point of the non-cross-linked thermoplastic polymer being employed. Due to the invention a large number of cheap polymeric materials have become suitable for the manufacture of seals, and due to the cross-linking the swelling caused by lubricants can be reduced considerably.

Method of manufacturing a seal for a roller bearing

A water pump, especially for the cooling system of a combustion engine of a car, has a housing with a space for a fluid. This space contains a pump device. The pump device is mounted on a shaft which projects form the housing. The shaft rotates while being supported by a bearing assembly. The bearing assembly has an outer stationary ring mounted on the housing. The fluid space id sealed with respect to the shaft by a sealing unit having a first ring connected to the shaft, and a stationary second ring mounted on the outer ring of the bearing assembly. The first and second rings have sealing surfaces which are directed toward one another, or extend axially. The first ring is resiliently biased toward the second ring, to provide a seal therebetween. The first ring is connected to the shaft via an elastic dampening and centering element located between the inner circumference of the first ring and the outer circumference of the shaft, and distributed over the circumference of the shaft.

A device for supplying a lubricant to a mechanism, in particular a rolling bearing, comprising a container for holding a quantity of lubricant which at its lower edge is provided with a discharge channel for the lubricant and wherein a spring-loaded piston-like element is located in such fashion that the force of the spring presses this element in the direction of the discharge channel, characterized in that in the discharge channel is mounted a valve member, normally found in the closed position, which is coupled with an electric circuit which upon excitation controls the valve member bringing this valve member into the open and again into the closed position.

Lubricating device

A device for supplying a lubricant to a mechanism, particularly a rolling bearing, comprising a container for holding a quantity of lubricant and having at its lower end a discharge channel for the lubricant, and expulsion means disposed within the container for expelling the lubricant through the discharge channel. The expulsion means includes a displacement pump having a rotary part mounted in the discharge channel, a shaft coupled to the rotary part, shaft drive means and intermittent means coupled to the shaft drive for intermittently permitting the shaft drive means to be coupled to the shaft so as to rotate said shaft.

Lubrication device

An improved seal for a rotary shaft which exerts a pumping effect on a lubricant on its shaft. The seal comprises a substantially rigid annular supporting member and a generally annular elastic sealing member affixed coaxially to the supporting member and extending radially inwardly of the supporting member. The radially inner surface of the said sealing member defines a sealing contact surface adapted to sealingly contact the shaft. The improvement includes a first circumferentially extending portion on the sealing contact surface and a plurality of projecting portions extending axially from one side of the first portion and being circumferentially spaced apart, the first portion having a substantially constant axial width throughout its circumferences. The first portion also extends at an acute angle with respect to the axis of the rotary shaft, the projections having circumferentially extending edges spaced from the one side of the first portion and joined to second and third edges which extend to the one side of the first portion at acute angles thereto.

A device for supplying a lubricant comprises a receptacle to contain the lubricant with an opening arranged in the bottom thereof. A piston member is sealingly displaceable along the walls inside the receptacle and located in initial position near the top of the receptacle. At least one extendable or expandable member is supported by the receptacle at the circumference over the lubricant present in the receptacle with a bottom portion located near and above the piston member which member contains an electrolyte. At least one galvanic element is supported over the electrolyte inside the receptacle, and a flexible member and rupturable support are provided for bringing the galvanic element into contact with the electrolyte. The said extendable or expandable member with the electrolyte present therein and the galvanic element form a separate assembly detachable from the receptacle. The receptacle consists of a bottom part open at the top which may contain the lubricant and a cover capable of closing this portion from the top, so that after removal of the cover, the separate assembly may be taken out of the receptacle.

Device for supplying a lubricant

A sealing ring for a rotary shaft which serves to retain and/or return a lubricant, includes a generally annular rigid supporting member and a generally annular elastic sealing member connected to the supporting member. The sealing member terminates in a sealing surface contacting the shaft with one side of the sealing surface directed toward the ring lubricant and the other side toward the atmosphere. On the atmospheric side, spaced-apart projections rest against the shaft surface. Projections on the lubricant side also press against the shaft surface. The projections on both sides include edges oriented obliquely to the shaft axis which provide pumping action when the shaft rotates. Lubricant pumped under the sealing surface to the atmospheric side by projections on the lubricant side is pumped back by the projections on the atmospheric side. In the process the seal is lubricated.

A bearing assembly comprising inner and outer rings having spaced raceways for a plurality of rolling elements, seal means adjacent at least one axial end of the rings completely within the axial confines of the rings comprising a first sealing element and an annular shield of a rigid material secured to one of the race rings spaced axially outwardly of the first sealing element and having an outer edge spaced from an arcuate wall of the other race ring to define a slotshaped opening to form between the first sealing element and the shield a chamber connected via the slot-shaped opening to the environment of the bearing.

Seal for a roller bearing

A seal for a rolling bearing unit having an inner and an outer race becoming or forming a unit with an attaching flange and rows of rolling members between the races. The seal comprises an annular element, which at its inner edge, near the raceway of a row of rolling members, may be attached on the inner race and the outer edge of which, at the same time, rests sealingly against the annular main surface of the outer race.
