A system and method for determining or estimating the presence and effect of light-attenuating inhomogeneities in tissue when performing medical treatment or diagnostics using optical members in tissue. The system and method comprising inserting a plurality of optical members into the tissue, and then measuring by emitting light through a sub-set of optical members at a time, while measuring the light collected by another sub-set of optical members. Combining said measurement data with a model for light propagation in tissue, and setting up a system of equations. Solving the unknown attenuation values from said system of equations.

System and method for determining light attenuation at optical members inserted in tissue

A monitor for pulsed high energy radiation therapy using a radiation beam passing through a treatment zone, the radiation of 0.2 MEV or greater; has a camera for imaging Cherenkov light from the treatment zone; apparatus for preventing interference by room lighting, the camera synchronized to pulses of the radiation beam; and an image processor adapted to determine extent of the beam area on the patient skin from the images. Additionally an image processor determines cumulative skin dose in the treatment zone from the images. In embodiments, the processor uses a three-dimensional model of a subject to determine mapping of image intensity in images of Cherenkov light to radiation intensity in skin, applies the mapping to images of Cherenkov light to verify skin dose delivered, and accumulates skin dose by summing the maps of skin dose.

Cherenkov imaging systems and methods to monitor beam profiles and radiation dose while avoiding interference from room lighting

A method and system for luminescence molecular imaging or tomography of a region of interest in a scattering medium is disclosed. The system comprises a non-linear luminescent marker material arranged in the scattering medium. Contrast and resolution of the imaging or tomography is thus improved. The non-linear marker is for instance configured to upconvert incoming light of an illumination wavelength. The non-linear power dependence of the marker enables further improvement of the imaging by using images taken with two or more excitation beams simultaneously.

System, method, and luminescent marker for improved diffuse luminescent imaging or tomography in scattering media

A method and system for controlling and adjusting light in interstitial photodynamic light therapy (IPDT) in a subject is disclosed. More particularly, a method for controlling the light in interstitial tumor photodynamic light therapy is described using a calculation method for determination of status of tissue during the PDT treatment. The status is used in a feedback loop to control the continued PDT treatment. Methods are disclosed that constitute pre-treatment and realtime dosimetry modules for IPDT on the whole prostate glandular tissue. The method includes reconstruction of the target geometry, optimization of source fiber positions within this geometry, monitoring of the light attenuation during the treatment procedure and updating individual fiber irradiation times to take into account any variation in tissue light transmission. A control device that is arranged to restrict delivery of therapeutic light treatment at least temporary in dependence of at least one attribute of one of photodynamic treatment parameters. In comparison to no treatment feedback, a significant undertreatment of the patient as well as damage to healthy organs at risk are avoided.

System and method for controlling and adjusting interstitial photodynamic light therapy parameters

A system for providing interstitial photodynamic and/or photothermal therapy on a region of tissue in a body, comprising at least one light source adapted to deliver a therapeutic light to the region of tissue, such that the light source is interstitially inserted into the tissue for interaction with a photosensitizer agent and/or for providing a controlled thermal environment of the tissue; and a unit for determining an optimized number of the light sources and individual position of each of the light sources in the region of tissue as well as individual control parameters for each of the light sources.
