A photoelectric smoke detectorfor detecting smoke particlesis disclosed, the smoke detectorcomprising: a light emitting element, a light receiving elementfor receiving lightemitted by the light emitting elementand scattered by the smoke particlesand for outputting a detection signalobtained by photoelectrical converting the received light, an amplifier circuitfor amplifying the detection signaland providing an amplified output signal, wherein the amplified output signalmay be divided into an offset-signaland an amplified detection signal, whereby the photoelectric smoke detectoris adapted to operate in a pulsed mode, so that the detection signalcomprises high-frequency components, whereby the amplified detection signalis determined by high-frequency components of the detection signaland that the offset-signalis determined by low-frequency components of the detection signaland/or by low-frequency components of at least an intermediate signal based on the detection signal, and whereby the amplifier circuitis adapted to transfer the high-frequency components with a higher gain and to transfer the low-frequency components with a lower gain in order to improve the signal ratio between the amplified detection signaland the offset-signal
