A method for anti-corrosion pre-treatment of metal substrates using zirconium-based aqueous anti-corrosion agents comprising polycyclic hydrocarbons that have at least one anellated benzene ring, each having at least two ring-substituted hydroxyl groups in ortho position to each other. The aqueous anti-corrosion agent can be substantially free both of passivating chromium-containing compounds and of fluoride-containing compounds that pickle the metal substrate. Pre-treatment by drying (dry-in-place method) is especially advantageous. Accordingly, the method according to the invention is suitable in particular for the pre-treatment of metal strip, wherein excellent anti-corrosion results are achieved on surfaces of aluminum or steel. The invention further relates to a method for producing coated can lids from aluminum strip by using the previously mentioned zirconium-based anti-corrosion agent. A further aspect comprises an aqueous concentrate for providing the ready-to-use anti-corrosion agents.

Fluoride-free zirconium-based metal pre-treatment for passivation

The invention relates to use of an aqueous composition for pretreating can body stock, whereby an inorganic-organic conversion layer is formed, which effects outstanding sliding behavior of the shaped can body stock and in addition offers an outstanding holding primer for subsequent coating. The invention comprises a process in which can body stock which is deep-drawn to form a half-open can cylinder, before further shaping processes, is contacted with an acidic aqueous composition which contains water-soluble inorganic compounds of Zr, Ti, Si, Hf or Ce, water-soluble polymers having carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups and also a dispersed wax. Both outer and inner surfaces of metallic can cylinders can be pretreated in the process. The invention also relates to an acidic aqueous composition for use in the pretreatment process, which contains water-soluble polymers selected from condensation products of glycoluril and aldehydes.

Can pretreatment for improved coat adhesion

The invention relates to the use of an acidic aqueous composition for pretreating cans, wherein an inorganic-organic conversion layer is formed in the course of the pretreatment, said conversion layer, as such, offering an excellent adhesive base for wax which improves sliding of the formed can and for the subsequent coating. The invention relates to a wet-chemical pretreatment method in which a can cylinder is first contacted with an acidic aqueous composition that contains water-soluble inorganic compounds of Zr, Ti, Si, Hf or Ce, and water-soluble polymers comprising carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups; and subsequently is contacted with an aqueous wax dispersion. The invention further relates to an acidic aqueous composition suitable for the pretreatment method comprising water-soluble polymers selected from condensation products of glycoluril and aldehydes. The invention further relates to a method for producing can cylinders, said method including the pretreatment according to the invention.

Can pretreatment for improved coating adhesion

A process for the corrosion protection of steel strips coated with zinc or zinc alloy, characterised in that the steel strips coated with zinc or zinc alloy are brought into contact with an aqueous treatment solution having a pH within the range of from 1.5 to 3.5, which contains 1 to 20 g/l manganese(II) ions and 1 to 150 g/l phosphate ions, and the solution is dried without intermediate rinsing. Optionally the solution may contain in addition: up to 10 g/l zinc ions, up to 10 g/l nickel ions, up to 20 g/l titanium ions, up to 50 g/l silicon ions in the form of silicon compounds, up to 30 g/l fluoride ions, up to 150 g/l of one or more polymers or copolymers of polymerisable carboxylic acids selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and maleic acid, and esters thereof with alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The present invention also relates to the correspondingly-treated metal strips.

A process for controlling the layer weight during the phosphating of steel strip zinc-coated on one or both sides, using a phosphating solution which contains 1 to 6 g/l zinc ions and 10 to 30 g/l phosphate ions, characterized in that a Fe(II) ion content within the range of 3 to 100 mg/l is established in the phosphating solution. The higher the Fe(II) content, the lower is the layer weight. An alteration in the Fe(II) content of 3 to 20 mg/l results in an alteration in the layer weight of about 0.1 g/m .

In a process for phosphatizing electrolytically and/or hot-dip galvanized steel strip, the steel strip is briefly treated with acidic phosphatizing solutions which contain, in addition to zinc and phosphate ions, manganese and nickel cations and anions of oxygen-containing acids with an accelerator effect. Activation of metal surfaces prior to phosphating can be improved by using aqueous dispersions of polymeric titanium(IV) phosphates in which at least 95% by weight of the polymeric particles have a particle diameter of less than 200 nm. This low particle diameter is attained by adding a titanium(IV)-complexing agent before or during an otherwise conventional reaction between a titanium(IV) compound, acid or phosphate, and water. The complexing agent is used in an amount of less than the stoichiometric amount, based on the titanium(IV) content. The best complexing agents are poly(aldehydocarboxylic acids), 1,1-diphosphonic acids, and/or the alkali metal salts of these types of acids.
