A packaging machine for producing blister packs has an inspection device with at least one detection device configured to optically detect individual blister packs. The upper side and the lower side of each blister pack is inspected by means of the at least one optical detection device.

A transfer device having a plurality of pick-up heads loads products into receptacles. The products are provided in a random arrangement in a pick-up area, and the position of each product is detected. To pick up the products, the transfer device is moved over the pick-up area and each pick-up head picks up an individual product at a pick-up time and in a pick-up position. The pick-up position and the pick-up time for the products are determined on the basis of the previously detected positions of the products. The placement of the products in a placement area may also occurs while the transfer device is moving relative to the receptacles.

The at least one item to be packaged is then moved from the transfer position to an intermediate storage area, which is arranged next to the transport device. A container is conveyed in the conveying direction to the transfer position by the linear motor transport device, and the at least one item to be packaged is moved back from the intermediate storage area to the transport device, thus filling the container. Afterwards, the filled container is moved onward in the conveying direction by the linear motor transport device.

The transport device for conveying products has several symmetrically configured, movable carriages having inverted U-shape, each carriage having permanent magnets, also has an endless guide rail for guiding the carriages and a linear-motor drive device to drive the carriages. Each symmetric half of each carriage has three running rollers projecting inwardly from sidepieces of the carriage. The three running rollers of the first half rest on first and second guide surfaces on a first side wall of the guide rail, and the three running rollers of the second half rest on first and second guide surfaces on the second side wall of the guide rail. Each guide surface is arranged at an acute angle to a longitudinal center plane of the transport device, and the two guide surfaces of each side wall are at an angle of 80&#xb0; to 100&#xb0; to each other.
