An absorbent core for absorbent articles such as diapers comprising a core wrap comprising a top side and a bottom side, an absorbent material between the top side and the bottom side of the core wrap, a first and second longitudinally-extending channel-forming areas disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis and substantially free of absorbent material preferably through which the top side of the core wrap is preferably attached to the bottom side of the core wrap. The core has a central absorbent zone between the first and the second channel-forming areas and a first and second lateral absorbent zones disposed laterally outwardly. The basis weight of the absorbent material in the central absorbent zone is higher than the basis weight of the absorbent material in each of the lateral absorbent zones for at least a first transversal section (S). This relation is inverted along a second transversal section (S) of the core. The first and second sections have each a length in the longitudinal direction of at least 10 mm.

The article comprises an intermediate layer between the topsheet and the absorbent core, the intermediate layer comprising at least one longitudinally-extending channel, preferably at least a pair of longitudinally-extending channels disposed symmetrically on each side of the longitudinal axis. The topsheet is depressed in the channel(s). The lotion-to-channel overlap ratio ranges from 0% to 20% of the area of the channel(s). The lotion-to-channel overlap ratio is the percentage of the channel(s) of the intermediate layer overlapping with the lotion pattern.

The distribution material is notionally divided in a front region, a back region and a middle region located between the front and the back region. Each of the front, back and middle regions is &#x2153; of the length of the distribution material. At least one of the front, back and middle regions of the distribution material comprises one or more layers. The one or more layers of the distribution material comprise a fibrous structure made of wet-laid fibers.
