Metered network synchronization techniques are described. A current network connection of a computing device is checked as to whether the current network connection has been identified as a metered network. Access by a synchronization engine of the computing device to communicate via the current network connection to synchronize data of the computing device with another computing device is managed based at least in part on a setting associated with the metered network.

Metered network synchronization

Mechanisms for synchronizing an object set with a remote data store are often performed at a particular frequency, e.g., once per hour or day. However, the objects of the object set may have different priorities, and it may be advantageous to synchronize higher-priority objects more often than regular-priority objects. The synchronization mechanisms may also differ (e.g., high-priority object synchronization may be direct and/or holistic, while regular-priority object synchronization may be differential, cached, and/or involving version and/or conflict resolution). Additionally, a resource-based threshold may be applied to the high-priority objects (e.g., a bandwidth cap) in order to reduce resource exhaustion, and high-priority objects that are not synchronized within the threshold may be synchronized with the regular-priority objects. These techniques may be particularly advantageous for synchronizing objects comprising an application state of applications of current or recent usage by a user, where application state 'staleness' is acutely visible to the user.

Opportunistic, priority-based object synchronization

A method for downloading destination addresses associated with a given client device from a server to the client device is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of determining a resource limitation of the client device, sorting the addresses, and transmitting a subset of the sorted addresses from the server to the device, wherein the transmitted sorted address subset is determined by the resource limitation. There is also provided a system and server for supporting Instant Messaging (IM). The system comprises a telecommunications network interconnecting a plurality of IM clients and an IM server, the plurality of IM clients configured to exchange instant messages with one another via the telecommunications network and the IM server, each of the IM clients having an associated IM address, the IM server comprising a memory for storing a plurality of IM addresses, a set of the IM addresses corresponding to each of the IM clients and wherein a given set comprises at least one IM address other than an IM address of the IM client to which the given set corresponds, wherein on occurrence of a triggering event associated with a particular IM client the IM server selects a subset of the IM addresses from the set of addresses corresponding to the particular IM client based on a resource limitation of the particular IM client and transmits the selected IM address subset to the particular IM client.
