A method and apparatus for enabling the use of a non-sterile battery with a sterile surgical instrument. The sterile transfer container has a tubular body with a closed distal end and an open proximal end. The container is provided with a cover and a locking mechanism for locking the cover to the body. The container is adapted to be attached to a surgical instrument in such a way that the latch assembly is prevented from opening until the container is removed from the instrument.

An arthroscopic or endoscopic component joining system for selectively and temporarily connecting instruments during closed surgical procedures. The system is modular and operable as a bridge system for connecting instruments to selected cannulas or as a sheath system for connecting a scope to a scope sheath. Various improvements provide for greater fluid flow through the components than is available with known systems of similar size.

Arthroscopic component joining system

An autoclavable remote control unit for controlling the operation of a surgical device. The remote control unit has a plurality of Hall effect sensors arranged on a printed circuit board hermetically encased within a polymeric housing molded from an autoclavable material. Each Hall effect sensor may be activated by an associated magnet which is resiliently supported within a panel which can be closed against the housing or hinged away from the housing. In the closed position, the magnets may be momentarily depressed to activate the associated Hall effect sensor to thereby control the operation of a selected function of the surgical device. The disclosure also includes the method of remotely controlling a surgical device by providing at least one non-contiguously activatable switch element in a hermetically sealed housing and activating the element by bringing into its proximity an activating element.

Autoclavable remote hand control

A peristaltic pump tubing system for use with a peristaltic pump roller assembly in a surgical procedure. The system comprises a uniquely shaped disposable tubing cassette for retaining the tubing to be used during the surgical procedure and a uniquely shaped cassette holding station situated adjacent the peristaltic pump roller assembly. The cassette comprises a housing containing a flexible tube for engagement with the peristaltic rollers and having an open end to enable the cassette to be moved downwardly to place the tube in alignment with the plane in which the peristaltic rollers rotate. The cassette holding station is provided with a front panel extending in a plane parallel to the roller plane of rotation, the panel being spaced from the pump housing by a sufficient amount to create a pump roller station into which the cassette may fit. The front panel thus holds the cassette tubing in place against the rollers and a single resilient latch at the bottom of the cassette is used to hold the cassette down in place. Simply pulling the tab on the cassette away from the rollers will release the cassette and enable it to be removed from the pump station.

Autoclavable surgical remote control

A method and apparatus for use as a wenchless and adapterless collet system for attaching an elongated surgical cutting blade to an oscillating surgical saw. The system comprises a collet adapted to mate with a particularly shaped blade hub. The collet has a transverse clamping head attached to a longitudinally slidable, axially aligned shaft which is adapted to slide axially along the axis of the handpiece. The handpiece has an annular anchor sleeve having an annular groove proximally adjacent to the collet clamping head. The hub at the proximal end of the blade is provided with a radially inwardly extending locking flange adapted to engage the clamping head and a radially inwardly extending anchor flange adapted to engage the annular groove in the anchor sleeve. The longitudinal spacing between the hub flanges enables the hub to be received adjacent the anchor groove in an interdigitating mating of complementarily shaped surfaces.

Wrenchless and adapterless collet system for surgical blades

A method and apparatus for use as a wrenchless and adapterless collet system for attaching an elongated surgical cutting blade to an oscillating surgical saw. The system comprises a collet adapted to mate with a particularly shaped blade hub. The collet has a transverse clamping head attached to a longitudinally slidable, axially aligned shaft which is adapted to slide axially along the axis of the handpiece. The handpiece has an annular anchor sleeve having an annular groove proximally adjacent to the collet clamping head. The hub at the proximal end of the blade is provided with a radially inwardly extending locking flange adapted to engage the clamping head and a radially inwardly extending anchor flange adapted to engage the annular groove in the anchor sleeve. The longitudinal spacing between the hub flanges enables the hub to be received adjacent the anchor groove in an interdigitating mating of complementarily shaped surfaces.

A rotatable shaver having inner and/or outer non-metallic elongated blades for use in endoscopic surgical procedures. In one embodiment a rotatable, elongated non-metallic inner tubular member is disclosed for use with a non-rotatable elongated metallic outer tubular member, the inner member having a flexible, non-metallic tubular body, a proximal hub and a distal tip provided with a cutting tip having a cutting edge formed therein. The elongated tubular body of the inner member is mechanically joined at its proximal end to the hub and at its distal end to the cutting tip. The mechanical connection enables the transmission of torque from the proximal end of the inner member to the distal end while sufficiently holding the tip, tube and hub assembly together to enable insertion and removal of the assembly into and from the outer member.
