A headset/headphone sensing jack ( ). A two-channel sensing circuit ( ) is provided which detects whether a headphone ( ) or headset ( ) is installed. By employing an impedance sensing circuit ( ), it is possible to use a single common 2.5 mm jack ( ) for both radio and telephony operation. Formerly, two separate jacks would be required for both functions. An electronic device ( ) according to the present invention is further capable of switching between AM/FM radio and telephone modes depending on whether a particular headpiece ( ) is installed.

Headset/radio auto sensing jack

A telephone with a ringer silencer call screening feature includes a ringer for indicating the receipt of an incoming call. A ringer control unit deactivates the ringer while the telephone is in a continuous on-hook state and reactivates the ringer upon termination of the incoming call. A call control unit for transmitting and receiving call signaling messages is connected to the ringer control unit for communication with the ringer control unit. Multiple keypads provide an interface between a user of the telephone and both the call control unit and the ringer control unit. A display connected to the ringer control unit and the call control unit displays caller identification information and a call status detector communicates with the ringer control unit upon termination of the incoming call. One method for screening calls includes utilizing one of the keypads to cause the ringer control unit to locally deactivate the ringer. Another method includes utilizing one of the keypads to cause the call control unit to transmit a transfer-to-voicemail message to a central office.

Telephone with ringer silencer screening feature

A surface mount connector that can be used for both single and double-sided PWB's. A telephone may have a printed wiring board with connector access from the bottom of the telephone and keypad activation from the top of the telephone. If a double-sided PWB is used, the connector is mounted to the bottom side of the PWB, while the keypad is mounted to the top of the PWB. The connector faces away from the PWB to provide access from below the telephone. If a single-sided PWB is used, the connector is mounted to the top side of the PWB, so that the keypad can also be mounted to the top side. The connector is placed, with connector access down, into an opening through the PWB. The connector extends down through the opening in the PWB with the leads of the connector remaining on the top side of the PWB. The leads of the connector are secured to pads on the top side of the PWB.

Method of mounting a connector on a printed wiring board

A SIM contact position tester (100) for verifying the position of SIM card contacts (c1-c8). A printed wiring board (102) is provided with traces (A-D) which correspond to the contacts (c1-c8) of the SIM card reader connector (101) and are configured to mate with the contacts of the SIM card reader connector (101) mounted within the radio telephone. A plurality of light emitting diodes (LED) (106) are coupled to the traces (A-D). The light emitting diodes (106) are configured to provide an indication of the position of the contacts (c1-c8) when the PWB (102) is positioned within the radio telephone. In one embodiment, the LEDs (106) sequentially light up as the printed wiring board (106) is moved into position over the contacts (c1-c8) of the SIM card reader connector (101).

Apparatus to verify position of electrical contacts within a sliding SIM

An improved speakerphone that may be viewed as a modification of a conventional half-duplex speakerphone that includes transmit and receive attenuators for alternatively isolating either a speaker or a microphone from a phone line. The attenuators are controlled by a controller that compares a signal generated by the microphone with a signal received on the phone line to determine which of the transmit or receive attenuators should be turned on. In the present invention, a first variable gain amplifier is connected so as to amplify the signal generated by the microphone prior to the signal being connected to the controller, and a second variable gain amplifier is connected so as to amplify the signal received on the phone line prior to the signal being connected to the controller. The first and second variable gain amplifiers have adjustable gain controls that are connected such that the gain of the first variable amplifier is decreased when the gain of the second variable amplifier is increased and vice versa. The adjustable gain control of one of the adjustable gain amplifiers is accessible to the user of the speakerphone and allows the user to adjust the threshold at which his voice will take over the conversation.

A method and apparatus for connecting remote options to a digital telephone base. Physical and communications protocols for connections and a flexible control scheme which can be as simple or elaborate as a given option requires are provided. The digital telephone includes an option bay connection, having a hierarchical control protocol. The option bay connection makes available several types of information, including: local analog audio, analog voice, digital voice, digital data and telephone control streams.
