The cannulated compression device creates fixation and compression across its tang housing, thus stabilizing and closing a bone fracture during placement. After insertion of the cannulated compression device, tangs are extended outward from the tang housing, locking the tang housing with respect to both rotational and axial movement. A compression nut is then threaded onto the proximal end of the tang housing. The nut has two sets of threads: a first set of threads interfaces with the tang housing, a second set of threads interfaces with the bone. By using different pitches, the amount of linear movement for the first set of threads and second set of threads is different.

Cannulated compression device

An anterior cervical plate is disclosed, along with threaded fasteners for securing the plate to vertebrae or other osseous material. The cervical plate has several pockets or apertures, preferably at least four, to receive a corresponding number of the fasteners. The pockets have spherical surfaces, and the fasteners have heads with similarly sized spherical surfaces, which when engaged permit each of the fasteners to be oriented at a variety of projection angles with respect to the plate. In connection with each pocket, the cervical plate incorporates a fastener retaining feature. The feature can take the form of a cantilevered tab or a beam supported at its opposite ends, in each case plastically deformable between an open position for admitting the fastener and a closed position for preventing retraction.

Anterior cervical plate and fixation system

An intramedullary interlock screw includes an elongate shank having a preferably cylindrical shank outer surface, and an external thread disposed helically about the shank and having a thread outer surface coaxial with and substantially parallel to the shank outer surface. The shank diameter as determined by the shank outer surface is at least 0.75 times the thread diameter as determined by the thread outer surface, and most preferably is 0.85 - 0.9 times the thread diameter, resulting in a considerable reduction in thread height as compared to similarly sized conventional bone screws. Further, the thread outer surface has a width at least twenty percent of the thread pitch, a substantial increase over the corresponding percentage in conventional bone screws. Both features contribute to an increase in the strength of the screw, in terms of resistance to bending forces applied laterally, i.e. perpendicular to the screw length. The increased thread width in proportion to the thread pitch reduces undesirable stress concentrations at the interface of the interlock screw and an intramedullary nail secured by the interlock screw to a long bone, e.g. the tibia or femur. A bone fixation system typically employs an intramedullary nail in combination with several of the interlock screws, each screw adapted to extend laterally through an associated opening at one of the nail end regions.
