A turbocharger includes a center housing that includes a through bore and a stepped locating pin socket that includes a stop surface; a bearing disposed in the through bore where the bearing includes an opening; and a stepped locating pin where the stepped locating pin includes a pin portion received in part by the opening of the bearing and a seating portion secured via an interference fit in the stepped locating pin socket where a maximum radius of the seating portion exceeds a maximum radius of the pin portion and where the stepped locating pin includes a stop surface that contacts the stop surface of the stepped locating pin socket to axially position the stepped locating pin in the stepped locating pin socket.

An assembly can include a shaft that includes threads and a free end that includes a shaft drive feature; a compressor wheel that includes a compressor wheel drive feature and a through bore that receives the shaft; and a nut that includes threads that mate the threads of the shaft.

A method of loading a rotating assembly of a turbocharger includes positioning a lock collar on an end portion of a turbocharger shaft that extends through a through bore of a compressor wheel; applying a pulling force to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft to achieve a desired amount of loading; welding the lock collar to form a welded lock collar fixed to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft; and releasing the pulling force where the welded lock collar maintains the desired amount of loading.

A method of loading a rotating assembly of a turbocharger can include positioning a swage collar on an end portion of a turbocharger shaft that extends through a through bore of a compressor wheel; applying a pulling force to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft to achieve a desired amount of loading; deforming the swage collar to form a swaged collar fixed to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft; and releasing the pulling force wherein the swaged collar maintains the desired amount of loading.

A turbocharger assembly includes a compressor wheel with a base surface, a nose surface, a z-plane disposed between the base surface and the nose surface and a bore extending from the base surface to the nose surface and a shaft that includes a first pilot surface disposed in the bore of the compressor wheel at a position between the z-plane and the nose surface, a second pilot surface disposed in the bore of the compressor wheel at a position between the z-plane and the base surface, and a recessed surface disposed between the first pilot surface and the second pilot surface. A nut adjustably disposed on the shaft adjacent to the nose surface can tension the shaft to apply a compressive load between the base surface and the nose surface of the compressor wheel. A compressor wheel assembly of a turbocharger can include a compressor wheel that includes a through bore that extends from a base portion to a nose portion of the compressor wheel; a turbocharger shaft disposed in the through bore of the compressor wheel where the turbocharger shaft includes an end portion that extends axially away from the nose portion of the compressor wheel; and a swaged collar fixed to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft.

A turbocharger assembly can include a housing with a through bore and an axial face disposed in the through bore; a locating plate with a keyed opening attached to the housing; and a journal bearing disposed in the through bore where the journal bearing includes a keyed compressor end and an enlarged outer portion defined between two axial faces by an outer diameter and an axial length where the axial face disposed in the through bore of the housing, the locating plate, and the two axial faces of the journal bearing axially locate the journal bearing in the through bore and where the keyed opening of the locating plate and the keyed compressor end of the journal bearing azimuthally locate the journal bearing in the through bore. A method can include providing a multi-piece locating pin, inserting a pin piece of the multi-piece locating pin into an opening in a wall of a bearing positioned in a bore of a housing of a turbocharger assembly, and securing a screw piece of the multi-piece locating pin in an opening of the housing to thereby secure the pin piece and axially locate the bearing in the bore of the housing of the turbocharger assembly. Other exemplary pins, arrangements and methods are also disclosed.

An exemplary semi-floating bearing for a turbocharger has a central axis defining a cylindrical coordinate system with an axial direction, a radial direction and an angular direction; a turbine end; a compressor end; journal surfaces between the turbine end and the compressor end, the surfaces configured to support a turbocharger shaft; and an opening disposed between the turbine end and the compressor end, the opening having a radial dimension that exceeds an axial dimension to, upon receipt of a locating pin, provide for movement of the bearing in the angular direction about its central axis and to provide for lesser movement of the bearing in the axial direction. A turbocharger assembly includes: a housing with a through-bore and a cross-bore that intersects the through-bore to define an upper portion of the cross-bore with a first diameter and a lower portion of the cross-bore with a second diameter where the first diameter exceeds the second diameter; a bearing disposed in the through-bore of the housing where the bearing includes a through-bore configured to support a shaft and a cross-bore that intersects the through-bore; and a locating pin with a diameter that exceeds the second diameter of the lower portion of the cross-bore of the housing, the locating pin press-fit at least partially into the lower portion of the cross-bore of the housing and disposed at least partially in the lower portion of the cross-bore of the bearing to locate the bearing in the through-bore of the housing. An exemplary assembly includes a component of a turbocharger that includes a bore that extends between an inner, exhaust gas side of the component and an outer, ambient side of the component; a shaft that includes a pin portion and a head portion; a sleeve positioned on the pin portion of the shaft; and a bushing positioned over at least part of the sleeve and over at least part of the head portion of the shaft where the bushing seats the shaft and the sleeve in the bore. During operation of a turbocharger that includes such an assembly, the shaft, the sleeve and the bushing restrict flow of exhaust gas from the inner, exhaust gas side of the component to the outer, ambient side of the component. Sealed shaft assembly for exhaust turbines

A variable-nozzle turbocharger includes a cartridge containing a variable vane mechanism connected between the center housing and the turbine housing. The cartridge comprises an annular nozzle ring supporting an array of rotatable vanes, an insert having a tubular portion sealingly received into the bore of the turbine housing and having a nozzle portion extending radially out from one end of the tubular portion and being axially spaced from the nozzle ring with the vanes therebetween, a plurality of spacers connected between the nozzle portion of the insert and the nozzle ring, and an annular retainer ring fastened to the center housing so as to capture the nozzle ring between the retainer ring and the center housing. The retainer ring is formed as a separate part from the insert ring and is mechanically and thermally decoupled from the insert.

An exemplary multi-piece locating pin for a turbocharger assembly includes a screw piece with a nub and a securing feature to secure the screw piece in a housing of a turbocharger assembly and a pin piece with a receptacle configured to receive the nub and a locating surface to locate a bearing in a bore of the housing. An exemplary turbocharger assembly includes a housing with a bore, a bearing positioned in the bore where the bearing has a wall opening and a multi-piece locating pin secured to the housing and inserted at least partially in the wall opening to axially locate the bearing in the bore. Other exemplary pins, arrangements and methods are also disclosed.

Various cambered vanes are constructed for use within a vaned turbocharger and include an inner airfoil surface oriented adjacent a turbine wheel, and an outer airfoil surface oriented opposite the inner airfoil surface. The inner and outer airfoil surfaces define a vane airfoil thickness. A cambered vane leading edge or nose is positioned along a first inner and outer airfoil surface junction, and a vane trailing edge positioned along a second inner and outer surface junction. The vane inner and outer airfoil surfaces are specially configured to provide a vane camberline having a curved section, which can. provide for improved gas flow distribution, thereby increasing the effective operating range of the turbocharger.
