A multifunctional device layer may include a lightguide substrate having an optically patterned surface and an opposing non-patterned surface. The non-patterned surface of the lightguide substrate is coated with a first material having a first refractive index and the patterned surface is coated with a second material having a second refractive index. The first refractive index may be lower than the second refractive index and each may be lower than a refractive index of the lightguide substrate. A touch sensor may be formed on the coated non-patterned surface of the lightguide substrate, the coated patterned surface, or on an interstitial layer deposited on the coated non-patterned surface or the coated patterned surface. An anti-glare/anti-reflective coating potentially having ultraviolet (UV) absorption properties may be applied to the touch sensor.

Using display components for light sensing

Facilitating the display of an image in a display system comprising a display panel having sub-pixels, and a backlight having individually addressable colored light emitters configured to provide light to the sub-pixels. From received image data, sub-pixel color values corresponding to color values transmitted by respective ones of the sub-pixels for display of the image are determined. From the image data, backlight values corresponding to brightnesses of ones of the colored light emitters for display of the image are determined, as are a portion of the sub-pixel color values and a portion of the backlight values that collectively correspond to a saturated or near-saturated yellow color in the displayed image. The backlight values are adjusted by increasing an amount of yellow light to be emitted by emitters of the backlight, and the color values are adjusted by decreasing an amount of yellow light to be transmitted by the sub-pixels.

Method for reducing simultaneous contrast error

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to arrangements and techniques that provide for improving resolution of black and white images displayed by a display of an image display apparatus, for example an EWD. An electrowetting display device comprising a plurality of sub-pixels. Each sub-pixel comprises a substrate, an electrode layer on the substrate, and a hydrophobic layer on the electrode layer. A first fluid is disposed on the hydrophobic layer and a second fluid is disposed on the first fluid. The second fluid is immiscible with the first fluid. The plurality of sub-pixels is arranged in an angled relationship with respect to horizontal and vertical borders of the electrowetting display device.
