A transmission system includes a transmission housing and a countershaft having no less than two gears, with the gears defining a plurality of gear ratios. The transmission system also includes a module housing, a first output shaft rotatably coupled to the countershaft, and a second output shaft rotatably coupled to the countershaft. The transmission system further includes a first clutch configured to selectively rotatably couple the first output shaft to the countershaft. The transmission system also includes a second clutch configured to selectively rotatably couple the second output shaft to the countershaft. The transmission system further includes an electric machine configured to deliver rotational power to at least one of the first and second output shafts to deliver rotational power to the countershaft. The countershaft is rotatably coupled to either of the first and second output shafts for all of the gear ratios.

A transmission system includes an input shaft, a transmission housing, and a planetary gear system rotatably coupled to the input shaft. The planetary gear system has a first and second gear ratio. The transmission system additionally includes an output shaft, a first electric machine, a second electric machine, and a shifting assembly. The shifting assembly includes a first stationary clutch element and a second stationary clutch element. The first electric machine is configured to apply rotational torque to the planetary gear system to synchronize rotational speed of the planetary gear system when moving between the first and second gear ratios, and the second electric machine is configured to provide rotational torque to the output shaft when the first electric machine applies rotational torque to the planetary gear system to synchronize rotational speed of the planetary gear system when moving between the first and second gear ratio.

Transmission system for use in a hybrid vehicle and method of controlling the same

An electric drive module that includes a housing, a pair of drive units and a coupling unit. The drive units are disposed in the housing and each drive unit includes a motor unit and a friction brake. The motor unit has a stator, which is non-rotatably coupled to the housing, and a rotor that is rotatable about a motor axis and configured to drive a wheel of a vehicle. The friction brake has a first portion, which is non-rotatably coupled to the housing, and a second portion that is drivingly coupled to the rotor. The friction brake can be operated to create a rotational drag force that resists rotation of the second portion relative to the first portion. The coupling unit is configured to selectively rotatably couple the second portions of the friction brakes to one another.

An axle assembly for use in a vehicle includes an axle housing extending along an axle axis. The vehicle includes a first wheel and a second wheel spaced from the first wheel, and a chassis extending along a chassis axis. The axle housing is configured to pivot with respect to the chassis about a pivot axis. The pivot axis is configured to be obliquely oriented with respect to the chassis axis such that the axle housing is configured to be a tilted axle housing. The axle assembly also includes an electric motor coupled to the axle housing and configured to be rotatably coupled to at least one of the first and second wheels. The electric motor is disposed in the axle cavity such that the electric motor is surrounded by the axle housing.

The present invention generally relates to a vehicle system which may include a primary clutch operably coupled with a primary inertia, and a torsional spring operably coupled with the primary inertia and also operably coupled to a transmission input shaft. The secondary inertia may be used to deliver a dual mass fly wheel effect and the secondary clutch may be constructed and arranged to be opened during shifting events.

The powertrain includes a transmission that has a transmission input member driven by the crankshaft and a transmission output member. A rear differential is configured to transfer torque from the driveshaft to rear half shafts. A second motor-generator is drivingly connected to the rear differential. A controller controls the second motor-generator to function as a motor that provides torque to the rear wheels through the rear differential. A modular rear drive unit operatively connects to the vehicle body.

A hybrid powertrain includes a hybrid transmission that has an input member operatively connectable to an engine crankshaft, at least one motor/generator, a gearing arrangement, and an output member operatively connectable to both the input member and said at least one motor/generator. An input brake has a first and a second brake shoe, a selectively energizable solenoid, and a mechanical biasing mechanism. The solenoid is operatively connected to the brake shoes via the mechanical biasing mechanism so that both brake shoes are operatively connected with the input member when the solenoid is energized. When the solenoid is deenergized, the first brake shoe remains operatively connected with and resists rotation of the input member when clockwise torque is applied to the input member and the second brake shoe remains operatively connected with and resists rotation of the input member when counterclockwise torque is applied to the input member.

A drive belt tensioner for mounting to a motor-generator unit comprises a tensioner pulley support having a centrally located pivot defining a pivot axis and first and second reaction arms extending outwardly from the centrally located pivot to define an angle therebetween. The reaction arms are configured to flexibly bias the tensioner pulleys when engaged by a drive belt force to maintain a desired drive belt tension.

A method for controlling a vehicle having a hybrid powertrain includes monitoring vehicle navigation and traffic patterns associated with a predicted travel path. It extends the powertrain instantaneous controller into a predictive control framework, and utilizes previewed traffic and geographic information based on on-board sensing and navigation information. An impending road load is predicted from which a fuel cost factor is optimized under a model predictive control framework. A state-of-charge trajectory is predicted from the impending road load and operation of the hybrid powertrain system is controlled in response thereto.

A vehicle includes a transmission that receives torque from an engine and/or a motor. A clutch assembly that may be actuated by a driver is operably disposed between the transmission and the motor, the engine, or both. A controller is configured to control the torque provided by the motor and the engine to prevent engine stall, excessive engine flare, or both, during manual actuation of the clutch assembly by the driver of the vehicle.
