Biomedical images of both anatomical structure and real-time changes in neuronal, metabolic, positional, and vascular function in humans and animals is described. Ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse or square wave generators and electrical samplers, implemented using integrated circuits are used to make arrays of miniaturized microwave modules that are placed around the portion of interest in the body or head, allowing images to be made through either time-domain transmission of these pulsed waves through the body, or time domain reflectivity of the waves from internal structures, or their combination. Signal processing separate and extract the time-varying functional information from the static structural image data. The time-varying functional information from certain brain regions can be interpreted in order to control prosthetics, Brain-Machine-Interfaces and the like.

Method and apparatus for non-invasive real-time biomedical imaging of neural and vascular activity

A method and apparatus for generating multiple ultra-fast (picosecond-range) electrical sampling apertures and pulses in response to a slewed control signal is disclosed. In one embodiment a series or sequence of sampling apertures are formed for sampling an input signal without the use of delay lines. In another embodiment, the input to be sampled is incrementally delayed to generate signals along a delay line. The delayed signals are simultaneously sampled in a sampling window to obtain a group of samples of an input signal at the same time. In another embodiment, a series or sequence of ultra-fast pulses are formed in an output signal without using delay lines. Parallel and serial sampler/pulser circuitry are disclosed.

Methods and apparatuses for multiple sampling and multiple pulse generation

An apparatus for performing non-contacting measurements of the voltage of a conductor includes a conducting membrane coupled to a transducer. The membrane is driven with an A.C. reference voltage, creating alternating attractive and repulsive electrostatic forces caused by the difference in potential between the membrane and the conductor. The transducer generates a signal having the same frequencies as the forces on the membrane, and the amplitudes of the A.C. components are proportional to the unknown voltage on the conductor. By dividing the amplitude of the A.C. components, an accurate determination of the unknown voltage is calculated A plurality of membranes and transducers may be arrayed to provide an image of multiple voltage readings. In addition, it is also possible to measure A.C. and D.C. voltage on the center conductor of an insulated wire without the need to pierce the insulation.

Method and apparatus for measuring D.C. and A.C. voltages using non-contacting sensors

A method and apparatus for generating ultra-fast (picosecond-range) electrical sampling apertures and pulses, requiring only a single transition of a control signal, is disclosed. Implemented in a novel circuit architecture that is suited to fabrication as a low-cost monolithic integrated circuit, the method produces more stable, more reproducible, and more precisely shaped sampling apertures and pulses, with lower power usage and cost, than conventional techniques. The combination of speed and reproducibility enabled by the invention allows the integration of large numbers of virtually identical fast sampling apertures or pulse generators on a single IC, enabling single-shot capture of such a rapid sequence of samples that even a single cycle of a very fast, microwave frequency, electronic waveform may be precisely sampled at multiple points.

A device for non-contact, non-invasive measurement of current or power in a wire, cable or conductor includes a small coil having multiple turns and no ferromagnetic core. The coil may be secured to a wand or housing adapted to be used to place the coil in close proximity to the wire, cable or conductor, whereby a voltage is induced in the coil. An amplifier may be utilized to increase sensitivity. A readout indicates the magnitude of the induced voltage, and a scaling device renders the readout display indicative of the current or power in the wire, cable, or conductor. To measure direct current flow, the coil may be vibrated or rotated adjacent to the conductor to cause the magnetic field to induce a voltage in the coil. The readout may comprise a digital display, a series of light emitting devices, or a flashing light emitting device having a flash rate proportional to the magnitude of the voltage. The device may be constructed in a wand or pen-like fashion, with the coil incorporated into the wand. The device may be combined with a voltage sensor.

A device for non-contact, non-invasive measurement of current or power in a wire, cable or conductor includes a small coil having multiple turns with a thin ferromagnetic strip. The coil may be secured to a wand or housing adapted to be used to place the coil in close proximity to the wire, cable or conductor, whereby a voltage is induced in the coil. Method and apparatus for rapid determinations of voltage and current in

A simple yet versatile non-contact optical inspection instrument and method are described for measuring the height and width of defects and contaminants on a magnetic disk surface. The instrument includes a sensor which produces an illumination beam that is modulated and then focused normally on the disk surface as a spot. The illumination spot is Doppler shifted due to the movement of the disk and the diffusely reflected light is interfered with a reference beam produced by the sensor's illumination optics. The sensor uses two collection optics channels which simultaneously detect both the specular reflected light and the diffuse scattered light produced by the disk surface. The phase shift of the specular reflected light and that of the diffusely scattered light are measured. The output signals from the sensors are processed to estimate the size and type of the defects. Another aspect of the present invention includes a demodulator which increases the frequency of an FM signal. Pulses representing the zero-crossings of the signal are generated and filtered to provide a voltage that is proportional to the frequency of the FM signal. Because the pulse train has a frequency that is significantly greater than the input frequency, a low-pass filter with both a high cut-off frequency and a gradual roll-off in frequency response may thus be used to optimize the output or demodulated signal in terms of increased bandwidth or faster response and more linear group delay.

To satisfactorily transmit two-way speech on digital computer networks, such as the Internet, it is necessary to reduce unpredictable delays due to variations in loading, routing and other factors. The present invention transmits extra packets of specially computed data along with the data representing speech. These extra packets are used at the receiving server to reconstruct any missing or late data packets. In one embodiment, any single packet of missing data in a stream of packets may be reconstructed. In additional embodiments, multiple packets of missing data may be reconstructed. This method is particularly suited to eliminating or reducing delays in networks in which data is sent down multiple diverse paths. Unlike prior art, it is not necessary to send full sets of redundant data down these diverse paths. The present invention significantly reduces latency with only a fraction of the added network bandwidth required with prior art methods that use full sets of redundant data.

Method and apparatus for increased quality of voice transmission over

An apparatus for performing non-contacting measurements of the voltage, current and power levels of conductive elements such as wires, cables and the like includes an arrangement of capacitive sensors for generating a first current in response to variation in voltage of a conductive element. Each sensor is positioned in an electric field of the conductive element, and is thereby coupled to the conductive element through a coupling capacitance. A reference source drives the capacitive sensor arrangement at a reference frequency so as to induce the flow of a reference current therethrough. A measurement network is disposed to calculate the coupling capacitance based on a measurement of the reference current, and to then determine the voltage in the conductive element based on the first current and the coupling capacitance. Measurements of a composite current through single or multiple-element conductors may be effected using a similar procedure, wherein the composite current induces a measurement current to flow within a set of coils positioned in a predetermined manner proximate the conductor. In both current and voltage measurements a balancing procedure may be employed, in which a measurement signal is balanced by a feedback signal so as to improve accuracy and reduce the effects of stray coupling.

Apparatus for measuring voltages and currents using non-contacting

Flow rates across a flat panel are determined in a non-intrusive manner by a novel technique involving the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR signals requiring two or more time-spaced nuclear spin excitations are generated in a selective manner, whereby at least two of the excitations are confined to preselected tomographic regions which are non-coextensive in the direction of flow, i.e., at least a portion of each region lies outside the other. The relative positions of the volumes ranges from a partial overlap to a complete separation with a gap in between. Flow detection is derived from signals reflecting movement from one such region to the other during the interval of time between the excitations. Quantitative or qualitative flow data may be obtained, including full range velocity distributions for systems where a range of velocities is present. The process is readily combined with known NMR imaging techniques to provide a two-dimensional array of flow data.
