A new class of proton transfer, benzazole, fluorescent compounds is composed of a 2-benzazolyl moiety covalently bonded to an aromatic fused ring heterocyclic moiety. The 2-benzazolyl moiety may be a 2-benzoxazolyl, 2-benzothiazolyl, or 2-benzimidazolyl. The aromatic fused ring heterocyclic moiety may be a 3-dibenzofuranyl or 3-dibenzothiophenyl each substituted at the 2 position with a proton donating group, or a 2-carbazolyl substituted at the 3 position with a proton donating group. The proton donating group may be hydroxy, sulfonamido, carbonamido, and the like, and preferably is hydroxy. The fluors are soluble in organic matrix materials such as solvents, monomers, resins, polymers, and the like. The UV-excited fluors emit short-lived fluorescence at .gtoreq.520 nm and may be used in the manufacture of fluorescent coatings, objects, scintillators, light sources and the like. The fluors are particularly useful for radiation-hard, solid scintillators for the detection and measurement of high energy particles and radiation and for UV filter materials.

Benzazole compounds with ESIPT fluorescence

A novel class of proton transfer, bis-benzazole, fluorescent compounds, i.e., fluors, is disclosed. The novel fluors include substituted or unsubstituted 1,4-bis(2-benzazolyl)-2-hydroxybenzenes and 1,4-bis(2-benzazolyl)-2-amidobenzenes wherein the benzazolyl group may be benzoxazolyl, benzimidazolyl, benzothiazolyl, and the like. The benzazolyl groups may be substituted with one or more alkyl groups to improve solubility in organic matrix materials such as solvents, monomers, resins, polymers, and the like. The novel fluors may be used in the manufacture of fluorescent coatings, objects, scintillators, light sources and the like. The novel fluors are particularly useful for radiation-hard, solid scintillators for the detection and measurement of high energy particles and radiation.

Proton transfer bis-benzazole fluors and their use in scintillator

Disclosed are organic laser dyes and more particularly o,o'-bridged oligophenylene laser dyes which when excited to lase emit radiation in various ranges and especially in the ultraviolet and violet ranges, that is, from about 300 nm to about 420 nm, of the light spectrum. An organic laser dye of this invention comprises an oligophenylene having at least one biphenyl moiety bridged between adjacent ortho positions via a single atom or a plural of atom substituents of various sizes. In one most preferred embodiment, the substituent bonded to the phenyl moieties forming the bridge is a carbon atom free of benzylic hydrogens. The bridging substituent can also be other atoms or groups free of reactive substituents. In another most preferred embodiment, the o,o'-bridged oligophenylene laser dyes are free of vinylene groups bonded directly to the phenyl moieties forming the oligophenylene chains. The o,o'-bridged oligophenylene laser dyes of the present invention are provided with relatively high power output and have relatively long photochemical lifetimes.
