Each grating has a grating width, d, and includes a plurality of alternating layers of a first material and a second material. The first material corresponds to a high index material. The second material corresponds to a low index material. A ratio of a first refractive index of the first material to a second refractive index of the second material is greater than or equal to two. Each first material layer has a first thickness, t1. Each second material layer has a second thickness, t2. The 2D PhC structure has a structure refractive index at or near zero for a range of frequencies.

Methods, systems, and assemblies for cooling an electronic component are disclosed. A heat sink assembly includes first and second substrates. The first substrate is in thermal contact with the electronic component. A primary channel is formed in the second surface of the first substrate. The primary channel is configured to direct cooling fluid for cooling the electronic component. An array of primary cooling fluid fins is positioned within the primary channel. The array of primary cooling fluid fins includes upstream solid fins and downstream open fins each having an upstream opening and downstream sidewalls. The secondary channel is formed within the second surface of the second substrate and is configured to direct partially heated cooling fluid away from the electronic component. An array of secondary cooling fluid fins is positioned within the secondary channel downstream. An enclosing layer seals the secondary channel.

Methods and apparatus for coating particulate material are provided. The apparatus includes a vessel having a top and a bottom, a vertically extending conduit having an inlet in the vessel and an outlet outside of the vessel, a first fluid inlet in the bottom of the vessel for introducing a transfer fluid, a second fluid inlet in the bottom of the vessel for introducing a coating fluid, and a fluid outlet from the vessel. The method includes steps of agitating a material, contacting the material with a coating material, and drying the coating material to produce a coated material. The invention may be adapted to coat aerogel beads, among other materials. A coated aerogel bead and an aerogel-based insulation material are also disclosed.

An improved draft tube spout fluid bed (DTSFB) mixing, handling, conveying, and treating apparatus and systems, and methods for operating are provided. The apparatus and systems can accept particulate material and pneumatically or hydraulically conveying the material to mix and/or treat the material. In addition to conveying apparatus, a collection and separation apparatus adapted to receive the conveyed particulate material is also provided. The collection apparatus may include an impaction plate against which the conveyed material is directed to improve mixing and/or treatment. The improved apparatus are characterized by means of controlling the operation of the pneumatic or hydraulic transfer to enhance the mixing and/or reacting by controlling the flow of fluids, for example, air, into and out of the apparatus. The disclosed apparatus may be used to mix particulate material, for example, mortar; react fluids with particulate material; coat particulate material, or simply convey particulate material.

Optical waveguide structures containing siloxane resin composistions as core materials and a method for preparing the waveguides are disclosed. The siloxane resin compositions can be cured by thermal energy or actinic radiation. In addition, conventional patterning techniques can be used, which makes the present method ideal for practicing on a commercial scale. The optical waveguides of the invention exhibit very low optical losses and are compatible with silicon processing requirements, which makes them useful in integrated circuitry. In addition, the high refractive index contrasts between the siloxane resin core and various claddings, including other siloxane resins, makes the waveguides particularly desirable.
