A resistor includes a substantially cylindrical resistive element having a resistance of less than about 1 m&#x3a9;, a substantially cylindrical first termination electrically connected to the resistive element and a second termination electrically connected to the resistive element. The substantially cylindrical first termination is hollow to allow for accepting a connection such as from a battery cable. In addition there may be sense leads present on the resistor. A method of forming a substantially cylindrical resistor includes forming a hollow cylindrical resistor body by rolling a flat sheet comprising a resistive element and a first termination and a second termination joined on opposite ends of the resistive element.

A surface mount resistor includes an elongated piece of resistive material having strips of conductive material attached to its opposite ends. The strips of conductive material are separated to create an exposed central portion of the resistive material therebetween. According to the method the resistive strip is attached to a single co extensive strip of conductive material and a central portion of the conductive material is removed to create the exposed central portion of the resistive strip.

Method for making overlay surface mount resistor

An electrical resistor has a surface mounted four terminal current sensor of a very low resistance value and capable of handling short pulses of high power. It comprises a flat metal late, 1 to 50 mils thick, of an alloy of high electrical resistivity, to which are welded, on two opposite sides, two flat metal plates of very high electrical conductivity which serve as terminations for electrical interconnection. A slot is cut, from the outside edge toward the center, into each of the two termination plates which divides them into a wide pad for connection of current carrying wires and a narrow one for voltage sensing. The depth of the slots is optimized to get the best stability of resistance readings with changing ambient temperature and under influence of the self-heating effect.

A high power resistor includes a resistance element with first and second leads extending out from the opposite ends thereof. A heat sink of dielectric material is in heat conducting relation to the resistance element. The heat conducting relationship of the resistance element and the heat sink render the resistance element capable of operating as a resistor between the temperatures of &#x2212;65&#xb0; C. to +275&#xb0; C. The heat sink is adhered to the resistance element and a molding compound is molded around the resistance element.

According to the method the resistive strip is attached to a single co extensive strip of conductive material and a central portion of the conductive material is removed to create the exposed central portion of the resistive strip.

A surface mount resistor is formed from an elongated resistive body having first and second terminal ends and a raised center portion formed therebetween. The raised center portion includes slots in its edges which form a serpentine current path through the raised center portion of the resistor. A dielectric surrounds and encapsulates the raised center portion and an electrically conductive material coats the first and second terminal ends. The method for manufacturing involves utilizing an elongated ribbon which is of unitary construction and which is formed to create a carrier strip and a raised center portion for the resistors ultimately to be formed.
