A core element of an investment core for use in a casting process used to produce an airfoil includes an investment core body, an extension connected to and protruding from the investment core body, and a connection portion connected to the investment core body and to the extension. The investment core body includes a ceramic material. A shape of the extension includes a tube with a centerline axis passing through a center of the extension. A shape of a cross-section of the extension taken along a plane perpendicular to the extension centerline axis includes an ellipse. The extension is connected to the investment core body by the connection portion.

Cast-in film cooling hole structures

An environmental sampling system includes a passage in an aircraft component and a removable collector disposed in the passage. The passage has an inlet at a first region and an outlet at a second region. When the aircraft component is in operation the first region is at a greater pressure than the second region such that air flows through the passage from the inlet to the outlet. The removable collector is configured to retain constituents from the air and to react with the media designed to mimic corrosion effects seen at higher temperatures on engine parts. The constituents can then be characterized and correlated to engine deterioration to predict maintenance activity.

A system for automated adaptive manufacturing of airfoil castings is disclosed. The system may receive a three dimensional scan of a work piece. The system may compare the three dimensional scan to a digital model of the work piece. The system may identify an area of dimensional abnormality on the work piece based on the comparison. Systems and methods for automated adaptive manufacturing of airfoil castings

A method of making an airfoil includes making a refractory metal core that defines an interior of the airfoil by a tomo-lithographic process, making a mold that defines an exterior of the airfoil, inserting the refractory metal core into the mold, and pouring an airfoil material between the refractory metal core and the mold to cast the airfoil.

A core element of an investment core for use in a casting process used to produce an airfoil includes an investment core body, an extension connected to and protruding from the investment core body, and a connection portion connected to the investment core body and to the extension. The investment core body comprises a ceramic material. A shape of the extension comprises a tube with a centerline axis passing through a center of the extension. A shape of a cross-section of the extension taken along a plane perpendicular to the extension centerline axis comprises an ellipse. The extension is connected to the investment core body by the connection portion.

A gas turbine engine internally cooled component airfoil includes a peripheral wall and a cooling system. The peripheral wall has an external surface including a suction surface and a pressure surface laterally spaced from the suction surface. The cooling system includes at least one or more passages bounded in part by the peripheral wall. At least a first of the one or more passages includes a first passage pressure side surface that includes an interior protrusion including a first sloped surface extending to a peak of the interior protrusion and a second sloped surface extending from the peak substantially in the direction of the pressure side surface. The slope of the second sloped surface is greater than the slope of the first sloped surface and a first cooling hole extends from the second sloped surface through the interior protrusion.

A component according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things a wall and a vascular engineered lattice structure formed inside of the wall. The vascular engineered lattice structure defines a hollow vascular structure configured to communicate a fluid through the vascular engineered lattice structure. The vascular engineered lattice structure has at least one inlet hole and at least one outlet hole that communicates the fluid into and out of the hollow vascular structure. A method for producing a component is also disclosed.

A method of making a refractory metal core includes forming two layers of the core out of a material. The layers are bonded together to form a laminate master pattern, and a flexible mold is formed around the pattern. The pattern is removed from the flexible mold, and pulverulent refractory metal material is poured into the flexible mold. The pulverulent refractory metal material is sintered to form the refractory metal core.

Apparatus for and method of making multi-walled passages in components

A combustor liner with an input end and an output end includes an annular inner wall and an annular outer wall. At least one of the inner wall and outer wall is three-dimensionally contoured. The inner wall and the outer wall form a combustion chamber with the contours creating alternating expanding and constricting regions inside the chamber causing combustion gases to flow in the circumferential and axial directions.

A tangential on-board injector (TOBI) for a gas turbine engine is provided. The TOBI includes a body having an entrance and an exit, the body having an outer curved wall and defining an air passageway between the entrance and the exit and a purge cavity configured on an exterior surface of the body with a purge cavity entry fluidly connecting the air passageway to the purge cavity. The purge cavity is configured such that particles in an airflow through the passageway will enter the purge cavity.

The system may comprise an actuation control system having at least one actuator configured to modulate turbine blade tip clearance between a turbine blade tip and a blade outer air seal (BOAS). Each actuator may be coupled to the BOAS. Each actuator may comprise a solid-state motion amplification device such as a flextensional actuator. The actuators may be configured to move the BOAS in a radial direction from a first position to a second position to control tip clearance.

A turbine casing may comprise a casing body a heat pipe disposed in the casing body. The heat pipe may include a vaporization section and a condensation section. The vaporization section may be located forward the condensation section. The vaporization section may be located in a high pressure turbine region of the casing body. A component according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a wall and a vascular engineered lattice structure formed inside of the wall. The vascular engineered lattice structure includes at least one of a hollow vascular structure and a solid vascular structure configured to communicate fluid through the vascular engineered lattice structure.

A system includes a turbomachine having one or more inspection ports. An LWIR sensor is positioned in the inspection port of the turbomachine to sense thermal energy emitted by a turbomachine component. An imaging device can be operably connected to the LWIR sensor to convert signals from the LWIR sensor to a thermal image of the turbomachine component based on the sensed thermal energy. In some embodiments, the LWIR sensor configured to image a ceramic coated turbine blade.
