A non-surgical bone conductive hearing aid that provides an in-the-ear, vibration transducer that vibrates the Mastoid bone, in which the middle ear and cochlea are embedded. The bone vibration bypasses the outer and middle ear and stimulates the inner ear. The cochlear within the inner ear convert the sound to electrical impulses that travel to the brain allowing the recipient to hear naturally.

An apparatus and method for the distillation of ocean and brackish water that includes a means for using the ambient temperatures of seawater and air to continually transfer the heat energy, from the outer perimeters of the system, back into the, centrally located, evaporation chamber and insulation for preventing heat from escaping to the atmosphere. The insulation comprises a first and second wall surrounding the basic assemblies of a desalination system in which the space between the first and second wall is under low partial vacuum and is partially filled with an insulation material for structural support. The system provides a feed through means that prevent heat transfer through the structural connections between the first and second walls. The system provides an evaporation system for flash evaporation by atomizing the input contaminated water, preheated by the heat of condensation into very small liquid droplets, which are then sprayed into a stream of hot dry air. The liquid rapidly evaporates leaving behind hot dry solids that is recaptured and used to preheat the input contaminated water.

High efficiency, large scale desalination system

An apparatus and method for the distillation of ocean and brackish water that includes insulation for preventing heat from escaping to the atmosphere is disclosed. The insulation comprises a second wall surrounding the basic assemblies of a desalination system in which the space between the second wall and basic assemblies is under low partial vacuum and is partially or totally filled with an insulation material for structural support. The system allows for flash evaporation of heated input water and condensing the resultant vapors into pure distilled water. The heat of condensation as well as heat from the salt byproduct may be recaptured and used to preheat the input contaminated water.

Large scale insulated desalination system

The present invention is directed toward methods for the production of non-infectious, replication-deficient, immunogenic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-like particles. These particles are prepared from a recombinant expression vector comprising a heterologous promoter operatively connected to a DNA molecule comprising a modified HIV genome devoid of the long terminal repeat (LTR) regulatory regions but containing at least the gag and pol genes in their natural genomic arrangement. This vector is introduced into mammalian cells to produce the particles of interest. These particles should prove useful in a number of diagnostic, virologic, and immunologic applications.

Non-infectious, non-replicating, immunogenic human immunodeficiency virus-like particles

An immunogenic retrovirus-like particle which is non-infectious and non-replicating and which is useful as a candidate vaccine component against retroviral infections, including AIDS and ATLL, is produced by genetic engineering. A DNA molecule comprising a retroviral genome devoid of long terminal repeats is incorporated into an expression vector, which is introduced into mammalian cells for expression of the retrovirus-like particle.

A novel conjugated protein produced by recombinant DNA techniques comprises a low molecular weight carrier protein portion that is normally self-aggregating to an immunogenic higher molecular weight proteinaceous material and a hapten portion wich is a peptide fraction that contains an epitope for an antigen for a pathogenic disease attached to the low molecular weight carrier portion. On aggregation of the self-aggregating protein, the hapten is on the surface of the viral particle, allowing for recognition of the hapten by the immune system. Upon introduction in vivo, the viral protein produces antibodies to both the self-aggregating protein and the hapten. A plurality of the conjugated proteins having different haptens can be combined into a viral protein to provide multi specific vacicines conferring immunity to a variety of pathogenic agents.

This invention is directed toward nucleic acids encoding self-assembled, non-infectious, non-replicating, immunogenic retrovirus-like particles comprising modified HIV-1 genomes devoid of long terminal repeats and containing nucleotide sequences encoding chimeric envelope glycoproteins. One preferred embodiment discloses the engineering of a series of expression vectors in which a synthetic oligomer encoding gp120 residues 306 to 328 (amino acids YNKRKRIHIGP GRAFYTTKNIIG) from the V3 loop of the MN viral isolate was inserted at various positions within the endogenous HIV-1.sub.LAI env gene. Expression studies revealed that insertion of the heterologous V3(MN) loop segment resulted in the secretion of fully assembled HIV-like particles containing chimeric LAI/MN envelope glycoproteins. Both V3 loop epitopes were recognized by loop-specific neutralizing antibodies. Immunization with HIV-like particles containing chimeric envelope proteins induced specific antibody responses against both the autologous and heterologous V3 loop epitopes, including cross-neutralizing antibodies against the HIV-1.sub.LAI and HIV-1.sub.MN isolates.

This invention is directed towards nucleic acid molecules capable of producing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) retrovirus-like particles, which are non-infectious, replication defective, and immunogenic. Recombinant HIV genomes were generated that are devoid of long terminal repeats (LTRs) but contain a heterologous, inducible metallothionein promoter. Additional modifications have been made to the primer binding site, pol, vif, and env coding regions. Upon transfection into a suitable host these DNA molecules are capable of producing HIV retrovirus-like particles that lack genomic RNA. These non-infectious particles will provide suitable antigens for HIV diagnostic assays and immunogenic preparations.

Non-infectious, replication defective, immunogenic HIV retrovirus-like

A beverage dispensing apparatus for dispensing through a nozzle a preestablished volume of a syrup and a preestablished volume of a soda to be intermixed within a nozzle prior to being dispensed into a collecting container such as a glass. The syrup side is connected to the soda side with the dispensing operation always occurring simultaneously in the preestablished ratios. The soda side includes a drive piston which is driven by the pressurized soda. The soda drive piston is physically connected to a syrup drive piston which controls the flow of the syrup to the dispensing nozzle. A single dispensing valve such as a low-power solenoid is to be used to cause the dispensing of both the soda and the syrup.

Non-infectious HIV particles lacking long terminal repeats

A fluid flow regulator has a housing with a cylindrical chamber. A member in the form of a ball having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the chamber can move within the chamber. In one embodiment, a bypass channel in the chamber extends around the ball. Fluid flow in the inlet passes through the orifice created between the ball and the channel, creating a pressure drop so that the fluid on the inlet side of the ball is at a higher pressure than the fluid on the other side. The resultant pressure force urges the ball against a spring. Fluid on the other side of the ball exits the chamber through a radial outlet slot positioned near the ball. When the inlet pressure and flow increases, the ball moves toward the outlet slot to cover a greater percentage of the outlet slot, which raises the pressure drop into the outlet, thereby compensating for the increased inlet pressure. A second longitudinal channel terminates on the downstream side of the ball. Inlet flow can use the second slot to bypass the ball, but movement of the ball can open or close the second channel to varying degrees. The second channel provides a way of changing the degree of regulation of the flow controller. In another embodiment, fluid is directed to opposite sides of the ball through two channels, a higher pressure and a lower pressure channel. An orifice in the lower pressure channel creates a pressure drop to decrease the pressure in the lower pressure channel relative to the pressure in the higher pressure channel. Increasing flow increases the pressure on the higher pressure side of the ball to urge the ball over a greater portion of the outlet.

Fluid flow regulator

The quick opening and closing valve of the present invention has a main chamber. An inlet from a source of liquid and an outlet extends into the chamber adjacent to and at right angles to each other. A ball or other type of plunger chamber moves (a) from a closed position seated on the outlet (b) to an open position spaced from the seat formed where the outlet and chamber meet. When the plunger is on the seat, the plunger blocks fluid flow from the inlet to the outlet, and the valve is closed. When the plunger moves off the seat, the inlet and outlet communicate so that fluid flows directly from the inlet to the outlet. A control port extends into the chamber on the other side of the plunger from the outlet. The control port is alternatively opened or closed by a control gate. When the control gate is in its closed position, the control port is closed. The pressure at the outlet is approximately atmospheric, but some fluid flows to the other side of the plunger which elevates the pressure there. The high pressure urges the plunger against the seat. Opening the control port drops pressure on that side of the plunger approximately to atmospheric. Because of the position of the inlet, the force of the fluid pushes the plunger away from the seat, and fluid then flows directly from the inlet to the outlet. Closing the control port builds pressure on the other side of the plunger from the outlet causing the plunger to move against the seat and close the valve. The present invention also discloses a mechanical system controlling the simultaneous opening and closing of two valves.
