An assembly includes a slider and a suspension assembly. The slider includes an air bearing surface and a slider mounting surface opposite the air bearing surface. There are a plurality of slider pads on the slider mounting surface. The suspension assembly includes a plurality of suspension pads on a suspension mounting surface. Each of the suspension pads is connected to one of the slider pads with a solder joint so that the slider mounting surface has at least one of a pitch, roll, or yaw angle with respect to the suspension mounting.

A head suspension assembly for carrying a slider assembly in a disc drive has a beam component having a front end and a rear end, a hinge component near the rear end of the beam component for connecting to an actuation means, and a gimbal component near the front end of the main beam section for carrying a transducing head. At least one of the hinge component and the gimbal component is made from a structural damping material having high stiffness and high damping capacity.

A disc drive head actuator includes a suspension structure and a slider integrated with the suspension structure. The actuator is one of at least two actuator assemblies batch-fabricated on a common substrate. The head actuator may be fabricated using mircofabrication techniques. The head actuator may have a reduced size, including package height relative to conventionally manufactured disc drives. Using mircofabrication and/or batch fabrication techniques provides reduced tolerances, which allows for increased actuation forces and/or reduced power consumption. Some embodiments include four-bar linkage actuators, which increase lateral stiffness of the actuator, allowing for a precise motion of the head relative to a media surface.

An assembly includes a suspension component with a surface extending over a flexible region of the suspension component. The assembly also includes a damping layer disposed in a pattern that extends onto the surface. A sealing layer that is non-friable covers the damping layer. The sealing layer also preferably comprises a shear restraint layer for the damping layer.

A solid-state actuation mechanism for use in a data storage system. The actuation mechanism includes an anchor fixedly attached to a housing of the data storage system, a spring member including a first end coupled to the anchor, a suspension coupled to a second end of the spring member, the suspension supporting a data head above a media surface, the suspension being biased by the spring member toward a first position, and an actuation component coupled to the suspension. The actuation component configured to apply an actuation force to the suspension to move the suspension laterally relative to the media surface.

A base plate of a head gimble assembly is attached to the sloped mounting surface. The head gimbal assembly is unbent in its free state and is bent upon being loaded onto the disc.

A rotary actuator system includes an actuator block, a head mounting block, and a linkage arm connecting the actuator block and the head mounting block. The system further includes an actuator motor operatively connected to the actuator block for rotating a link. The linkage arm includes a drive link which is rotated by the actuator motor and a guide link spaced apart from the drive link. The drive link has a first end and a second end; the drive link is pivotally connected to the actuator block at the first end and connected to the head mounting block at the second end. The guide link has a first end and a second end; the guide link is connected to the actuator block at the first end and connected to the head mounting block at the second end.

A method is used for moving a transducing head between tracks of a disc in a dual-stage actuation assembly. The dual-stage actuation assembly has a main actuator for coarse positioning of the transducing head and a microactuator for fine positioning of the transducing head. The method comprises accelerating the main actuator during coarse positioning of the transducing head and applying control pulses to the microactuator during coarse positioning by the main actuator to eliminate oscillation of the microactuator during and after coarse positioning.

Feed forward control of voice coil motor induced microactuator disturbance

A method and data storage device are provided that reduce off-track motion due to resonant modes in the storage device. The off-track motion is reduced by sensing movement with a sensor located on a suspension assembly of the storage device. Based on this sensed movement, the sensor generates a signal that is used to drive a control system to minimize the off-track motion.

A disk drive system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp assembly includes a set of ramps for loading and unloading the sliders and transducing elements carried by the sliders to and from the disks in the disk stack. The ramp assembly is attached to the base. An actuator assembly is movably attached to the base of the disk drive. The actuator assembly moves the load springs and attached slider and transducers to various positions on the disk. The slider is a block of material having corners and edges. Sliders have a backside surface and an air-bearing surface. The slider also has at least one recess therein. One or more pads of shock absorbing material are positioned within at least one of the recesses in the slider. The pads are positioned within one or more recesses to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material near the air-bearing surface from contacting the disk. In one embodiment, the pads are positioned within the recesses so that the second material is positioned near the air-bearing surface. The pads include a first shock absorbing material, and a second material harder than the shock absorbing material. The second material can be diamond like carbon. After forming the pad, diamond like carbon is deposited on the pad using photolithography.

A data storage system including a disc for storing digital information and transducer for retrieving such information. A slider supports a transducers proximate the disc surface and includes a bearing surface generally facing the disc surface for operation of the transducer above the disc surface. The bearing includes raised bearing surfaces, and shock-absorbing pads which are spaced from a base surface and extend to an elevation aligned with or below the bearing surfaces. Shock pads are located to provide a contact interface between the slider and disc surface.
