Mixtures of different polyolefins may be made by direct, preferably simultaneous, polymerization of one or more polymerizable olefins using two or more transition metal containing active polymerization catalyst systems, at least one of which contains cobalt or iron complexed with selected ligands. The polyolefin products may have polymers that vary in molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, crystallinity, or other factors, and are useful as molding resins and for films.

Polymerization of olefins

A polymerization to form a branched polyolefin, in which polymerization an ethylene copolymerization catalyst and an ethylene oligomerization catalyst form a series of ethylene oligomers that are &#x3b1;-olefins are both present, gives an improved polyethylene if the oligomerization catalyst has a relatively high Schulz-Flory constant.

In an &#x3b1;-olefin manufacturing process by the oligomerization of ethylene using an iron complex of a diimine of a 2,6-diacylpyridine or a 2,6-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, in which certain substituted iminoaryl groups are present, less higher molecular weight unwanted products are produced when the diimine and/or its precursor arylamine does not have impurities with substitution on a second ortho position to the imino group. This leads to less fouling of the process apparatus and higher yields of desired &#x3b1;-olefins.

&#x3b1;-olefin manufacturing process

An ethylene oligomerization catalyst that oligmerizes ethylene to a series of &#x3b1;-olefins and that has a Schulz-Flory constant of about 0.75 to 0.995 produces a stream of &#x3b1;-olefins. This stream is then added to a vessel containing ethylene and a copolymerization catalyst that copolymerizes ethylene and &#x3b1;-olefins. The resulting branched polyethylene often has good processing properties. The good processing is presumably due to the presence of 'long chain branching'. Such polymers are useful for films and other packaging materials, and for molding resins for molding parts such as industrial, automotive or electrical parts.

&#x3b1;-Olefin manufacturing process

A polymerization process for copolymerizing ethylene and a series of &#x3b1;-olefins to form a branched polyethylene, in which the series of &#x3b1;-olefins is generated in-situ by an ethylene oligomerization catalyst, is improved if the oligomerization catalyst has a Schulz-Flory constant of about 0.30 to about 0.55. This makes very little higher molecular weight &#x3b1;-olefins, which allows for easy removal of unpolymerized &#x3b1;-olefins from the polyolefin product.

Ovenware for microwave ovens which contain a composition comprising a susceptor and a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer are improved when the composition also has a thermal conductivity of about 0.7 W/m&#xb0; K. or more. Heat generated by absorption of microwave radiation by the susceptor is more readily conducted to the food being cooked when the thermal conductivity of the composition is high, particularly when the part containing the susceptor is relatively thick. Also described are designs for various pieces of ovenware containing this composition.

Aromatic polyesters are made in a continuous process in an extruder or extruder-like apparatus by reacting at elevated temperatures dicarboxylic acids, aliphatic esters of aromatic diols, and optionally aliphatic esters of aromatic hydroxyacids in an extruder while removing byproduct aliphatic carboxylic acid. The resulting aromatic polyesters, especially thermotropic liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters, are useful as molding resins for a variety of uses, for example electronic and electrical parts.

Polyolefins, preferably polyethylene, having a density of about 0.86 to about 0.93 g/mL, having three or more or branches of the formula (CHCH)H wherein m is an integer of one or more, provided that said branched polyolefin has one both of the following properties: said branched polyolefin contains less than 2 methyl groups per 1000 methyl-ene atoms and at least 30 total branches per 1000 methylene groups; said branched polyolefin contains less than 0.3 branches of the formula &#x2014;(CH)H per 1000 methylene groups; and in said branched polyolefin the level hexyl+ branches is at least 80% of the level of ethyl branches, and said polyolefin contains less than 2 methyl branches per 1000 methylene groups or less than 0.3 branches of the formula &#x2014;(CH)CHper 1000 me-thylene groups or both, thereby allowing good seals to be formed rapidly. This is advantageous when heat sealing these polyolefins, for example in the form of single or multilayer films.

Heat-sealable polyolefins and articles made therefrom

A polymerization catalyst system, containing a specified ratio of two iron complexes of a bisimine of 2,6-diacylpyridine or a bisimine of a 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde which produce polyolefins of differing molecular weights, is useful for producing polyolefins, especially polyethylenes, which are particularly useful for blow molding.

Catalyst for olefin polymerization

Drumsticks made from thermoplastic or thermoset resin compositions containing a reinforcing agent and having certain physical properties are readily formed, have good playing characteristics, and are durable.

Polymeric drumsticks

Blends of two or more polyethylenes are made by reacting ethylene with an oligomerization catalyst that forms &#x3b1;-olefins, and two polymerization catalysts, one of which under the process conditions copolymerizes ethylene and &#x3b1;-olefins, and the other of which under process conditions does not readily copolymerize ethylene and &#x3b1;-olefins. The blends may have improved physical properties and/or processing characteristics.

Manufacture of polyethylenes

Higher trialkylaluminum compounds may be made by forming &#x3b1;-olefin by oligomerizing ethylene using a transition metal containing catalyst, reacting the &#x3b1;-olefins formed with a lower trialkylaluminum compound to form higher trialkylaluminum compound(s) These may optionally be oxidized, as with oxygen, to form higher trialkoxyaluminum compound, which in turn may be hydrolyzed to &#x3b1;-alcohols. In one variation of the process lower &#x3b1;-olefins and higher (relatively) &#x3b1;-alcohols may be formed and isolated. Higher trialkylaluminum compounds and &#x3b1;-alcohols are useful as chemical intermediates, while lower &#x3b1;-olefins are useful as monomers for polyolefins.
