A light-emitting diode device, includes a substrate; and a light-emitting element having two or more commonly-controlled portions, the light-emitting element having two electrodes and a common unpatterned white-light-emitting layer formed between the two electrodes, at least one portion having an optical spacer, each portion having a different optical structure, the optical structure in one portion being tuned to emit substantially white light and that one portion having a transparent electrode, and the optical structure in a different portion being tuned to emit colored light.

An light-emitting diode device, including a substrate; and a reflective electrode and a semi-transparent electrode formed over the substrate and an unpatterned white light-emitting layer formed between the reflective electrode and the semi-transparent electrode, the reflective electrode, semi-transparent electrode, and unpatterned white-light-emitting layer forming an optical microcavity, and wherein either the reflective or semi-transparent electrodes is patterned to form a plurality of independently controllable light-emitting elements with at least one light-emitting element having no color filter. Color filters are formed over a side of the semi-transparent electrodes opposite the unpatterned white light-emitting layer in correspondence with the light-emitting elements, the color filters having at least two different colors.

A light-emitting diode device, including a substrate; and a reflective electrode and a semi-transparent electrode formed over the substrate and an unpatterned white light-emitting layer formed between the reflective electrode and the semi-transparent electrode, the reflective electrode, semi-transparent electrode, and unpatterned white-light-emitting layer forming an optical microcavity, and wherein either the reflective or semi-transparent electrodes is patterned to form a plurality of independently controllable light-emitting elements with at least one light-emitting element having no color filter. Color filters are formed over a side of the semi-transparent electrodes opposite the unpatterned white light-emitting layer in correspondence with the light-emitting elements, the color filters having at least two different colors. Additionally, a reflected-light absorbing layer is located over all of the light-emitting elements.

LED device having improved contrast

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device, comprising: first and second non-metallic transparent electrodes, and one or more layers of organic material formed between the first and second non-metallic transparent electrodes, the layers of organic material including one or more light-emitting layers; and one or more non-metallic reflective layers located on a side of either of the first or second non-metallic transparent electrodes opposite to the organic material layers; wherein the device further comprises a light transmissive scattering layer in optical contact with the organic material layers and the electrodes or wherein at least one of the one or more non-metallic reflective layers comprises a reflective scattering layer in optical contact with the organic material layers and the electrodes. Additionally, a low-index layer is preferably employed in various embodiments to improve device sharpness.

OLED device having improved light output

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device, comprising: first and second transparent electrodes, and one or more layers of organic material formed between the first and second transparent electrodes, the layers of organic material including one or more light-emitting layers; a reflective layer having a surface plasmon-polariton-supporting reflective surface located on a side of either of the first or second transparent electrodes opposite to the organic material layers; and a scattering layer in optical contact with the organic material layers and the electrodes. In certain embodiments, layer spacing is preferably designed such that the distance between the reflective surface and at least one of the one or more light-emitting layers is equal to or greater than 60 nm. Additionally, a low-index layer is preferably employed in various embodiments to improve device sharpness.

A light-emitting device, comprising: a light emitting element on a first side of a transparent substrate or cover through which light is emitted; and a microlens array on a second side, opposite to the first side, of the transparent substrate or cover though which light is emitted; wherein the microlens array comprises individual hemispherical shaped microlenses having a mean diameter of less than 20 micrometers and a mean microlens height to diameter ratio of greater than 0.30, and has a microlens area fill factor greater than 0.8.

A top-emitting OLED device with improved off-axis viewing includes a substrate; a reflective, substantially opaque, and conductive anode including a metal or metal alloy or both formed over the substrate; at least one organic layer formed over the anode and including an electroluminescent material; a cathode including a semitransparent metallic layer provided over the organic layer wherein the semitransparent metallic layer includes a low reflectivity metal; an light transmissive layer provided over the cathode; and the cathode and light transmissive layer being selected to reduce the color shift with respect to an off-axis viewing angle.

A white light emitting OLED apparatus includes a microcavity OLED device and a light-integrating element, wherein the microcavity OLED device has a white light emitting organic EL element and the microcavity OLED device is configured to have angular-dependent narrow-band emission, and the light-integrating element integrates the angular-dependent narrow-band emission from different angles from the microcavity OLED device to form white light emission.

A color OLED display having at least three different colored microcavity pixels including a light-reflective structure and a semitransparent structure comprising an array of light-emitting microcavity pixels each having one or more common organic light-emitting layers, said light-emitting layer(s) having first, second, and third light-emitting materials that produce different light spectra. Reducing angular dependency in microcavity color OLEDs

An OLED device that has at least one first pixel that emits light in a desired region of the visible light spectrum including one or more light-emitting layer(s) and a reflector and a semitransparent reflector respectively disposed on opposite sides of the light-emitting layer(s) and arranged to resonate light produced by such layers such that the light produced by the at least one first pixel has a spectral component in the desired region of the visible light spectrum. The device also includes at least one layer disposed at a predetermined position between the reflector and semitransparent reflector which undesirably absorbs light in at least a portion of the desired region of the visible light spectrum, and wherein the predetermined position of the undesirably absorbing layer is selected to reduce the absorption of such layer in the desired region of the visible light spectrum.

A color OLED display having at least three different colored microcavity pixels, each including a light reflective structure and a semi-transparent structure includes an array of light-emitting microcavity pixels each having one or more common organic light-emitting layers, said light-emitting layer(s) including first and second light-emitting materials, respectively, that produce different light spectra, the first light-emitting material producing light having a first spectrum portion that extends between first and second different colors of the array, and the second light-emitting material producing light having a second spectrum portion that is substantially contained within a third color that is different from the first and second colors, and each different colored pixel being tuned to produce light in one of the three different colors whereby the first, second, and third different colors are produced by the OLED display.

A microcavity OLED device including a substrate; a metallic bottom-electrode layer disposed over the substrate; a metallic top-electrode layer spaced from the metallic bottom-electrode layer; and an organic EL medium structure having a defined thickness, and including a light-emitting layer comprising a host material and at least one dopant disposed between the top-electrode layer and the bottom-electrode layer; wherein one of the metallic electrode layers is light transmissive and the other one is essentially opaque and reflective; wherein the material for reflective metallic electrode layer includes Ag, Au, Al, or alloys thereof, and the material for the light transmissive metallic electrode layer includes Ag, Au, or alloys thereof. The at least one dopant is selected to generate one of red, green, or blue light in the light-emitting layer. The defined thickness of the EL medium structure is selected so that the microcavity OLED device is tuned for emission of one of red, green, or blue light through the light transmissive electrode layer.

Microcavity OLED device

A stabilized OLED device for emitting light of a specific color includes a metallic anode and a metallic cathode spaced from the metallic anode. The device also includes a light-emitting layer including a host and a dopant, the dopant selected to produce light having a spectrum including light of the specific color, and a stabilizer provided in one of the device layers which improves the useful lifetime of the OLED device, wherein the stabilizer has an emission spectrum different from that of the light-emitting layer. One of the electrode layers is semitransparent and the other one is substantially opaque and reflective such that the stabilized OLED device forms a microcavity that emits a narrow band light with the specific color.
