A slider support assembly (20) includes a support arm (2) extendible over a magnetic disk (8). A slider (4), including a data head (12), is mounted to the support arm. The slider is mounted so the slider can pivot in a radially oriented roll plane (18) about an effective roll axis (44). The effective roll axis is typically located centrally beneath the slider, preferably about half-way through the disk. By moving the effective roll axis from a position above the data surface, as found with conventional gimbal-type slider supports, to a point below the data surface, pivotal radial movements of the slider relative to the data surface due to flutter of the data surface are reduced or eliminated. This helps to prevent track misalignment between the data head and data track caused by flutter or other excursions of the disk while spinning.

Slider support assembly and method

A system and method for recording on optical storage media utilize a beam projection assembly including a collimating lens and an objective lens. By providing an incident light beam having a substantially constant energy distribution to the objective lens, the radius of the spot projected on the optical media having an intensity greater than a threshold intensity may be increased. The radius may be further decreased by modifying the optics of the objective lens, typically by providing a center stop plate on the lens or by providing a one-half wavelength plate on the lens.

System and method using a reduce profile light beam for high density

An optical recording system. The system is directed towards optical recording media which is responsive to at least two wavelengths of light such as an erase beam and a record beam. Light of a lower wavelength is produced by a divergent light source such as a diode and only partially collimated in a collimating lens. When the record and erase beams pass through a common objective for focusing on the recording media, the slightly divergent lower wavelength beam is focused at the same location as the fully collimated higher wavelength beam.

A method and associated apparatus for providing improved data mark formation on an optical disc is disclosed. The amplitude of a laser write beam in an optical recording system is varied during application of the mark. Additionally, the illumination period of the laser is adjusted to account for differences between the actual length of a formed data mark and the desired length of a data mark.
