A method and system for offering and distributing software wherein advertisements are incorporated into the software product, wherein author compensation is based on advertisement generated revenues. In accordance with the features of this invention, the advertisements are loaded into the Random Access Memory of the computer whenever the software is invoked and are displayed before the software can be used. Moreover, advertisements are periodically refreshed by automatically accessing computer servers on the Internet and downloading and installing the advertisements on the computer's hard disk and usage records which can be used for author compensation are uploaded to the server. Computer users are given the option of disabling the advertisements by paying for the software.

Method for software distribution and compensation with replenishable advertisements

The present invention describes as automatic voice messaging system for use in a telephone network having a calling station connectible to a first switch and a called station connectible to a second switch, with the first and second switches connected by a digital serial link. The voice messaging system preferably comprises an interface, a detection circuit, a speech circuit and a control circuit. The interface monitors signals on the digital serial link. The detection circuitry is connected to the interface for detecting busy or ring/no answer conditions at the called station upon call initiation to the called station from the calling station, and for detecting receipts of a predetermined code from the calling station indicating that the caller desires to leave a message from the called station. The speech circuit is also connected to the interface for issuing a predetermined prompt to a user of the calling station. The control circuit is connected to the detection circuit and the speech circuit for controlling the speech circuit to issue one of the predetermined prompts to the calling station upon detection of a busy or ring/no answer condition by the detection circuitry, and for thereafter connecting the calling station to a host computer upon detection of the predetermined code by the detection circuit to enable the user to record at the host computer a message for the called station.

System for providing automatic voice messaging in a digital network

An interactive video services system for enabling store and forward distribution of digitized video programming is disclosed. In accordance with a feature of the present invention, encoded and compressed digital video signals are transmitted via satellite link from a centrally located uplink site to a plurality of hospitality establishments, where the digitized video programming is stored in the memory of a video server computer or is transmitted 'real-time' to the hospitality establishment's customers. The establishment either has its own downlink facilities or shares downlink facilities with other hospitality establishments. The uplink facility and satellite can transmit a variety of video signals--including video signals for real-time viewing by customers, compressed video signals for storage and subsequent retrieval and viewing by customers, and other types of digitized data, such as advertisements and barker screens. Various signal types, including operating system updates and digitized menus and advertisement graphics for the video programming, are separated and appropriately processed and routed at the hospitality facility.

Digital video services system with optional interactive advertisement

Method and apparatus for providing customers of hospitality facilities with the ability to access a variety of amenities and to interact with a video system in order to enable point-of-sale purchase of and payment for goods and services with a credit or debit card. In a preferred embodiment, the video services system comprises a plurality of card readers arranged in a distributed configuration, each of which are associated with a room terminal of a video services system. In a preferred embodiment, each the card readers may be powered using power provided by an associated TV and room terminal. Each room terminal functions as an interface between the systems control computer and the card reader associated with the room terminal. When the room terminal is in communication with the systems control computer, by having been polled or by initiating a transmission, billing data previously entered by a customer using the card reader is transmitted to the systems control computer, which processes the billing data, and, based on the content and format thereof, accesses one or more data bases or card validation bureaus to which it is connected. Based on preprogrammed parameters and on information resulting from queries made to data bases, the systems control computer interacts with the customer by generating and transmitting graphics (or display) prompts or audio or visual prompts using the or by providing entertainment and information services.

Interactive intelligent video information system

A system is disclosed for providing enhanced call service and call routing functions from a centralized location on a telephone network line through gateway connections to service providers. A multiple function interface located between a paystation and an originating central office includes a monitoring circuit for monitoring call signals from the paystation, circuits for obtaining coin or card billing information from the paystation and a control circuit for verifying the payment information and selectively directing the call to a service provider to bypass the originating central office. The interface uses an applications platform to communicate with the network and data bases. The platform assists in operations, maintains files and records, and functions as a communications protocol converter for the interface. The platform enables calling customer service preferences to be acertained automatically during call set-up upon receipt of billing information.

Applications platform for a telephone system gateway interface

A proactive call services system serving as a new node or switching network within a closed subsystem is disclosed. Remote monitors provide information necessary to allow the provision of enhanced services to the closed subsystem, which may be a telephone operator position system (TOPS) switch of a public switched network (PSN). The proactive call services system includes a network interface, voice interface, call processing platform (CPP), link platform and monitors integrated with the PSN. The system gathers information as the TOPS switch processes a call, and with this information offers additional proactive call services to the caller.

System for providing proactive call services utilizing remote monitors

A method and apparatus for providing enhanced call service and call routing functions from a centralized location on a telephone network line through gateway connections to service providers is disclosed. A multiple function interface located between a paystation and an originating central office includes a monitoring circuit for monitoring call signals from the paystation, circuits for obtaining coin or card billing information from the paystation and a control circuit for verifying the payment information and selectively directing the call to a service provider to bypass the originating central office. Calls are able to be routed by a signal generating circuit as direct (1+) calls from the interface to any service provider. Interface circuits permit the interface to interconnect analog and business lines on the paystation side of the interface with analog and business lines and digital links on the service provider side of the interface. A protocol of the invention controls the offering of call services between an intelligent paystation and an interface in which selection is determined based upon a predetermined preference.

Telephone system gateway interface

A multi-node telephone network having at least caller-controlled interfaces for providing automatic voice messaging. A first caller-controlled interface unit is preferably located in a trunk or line between the calling station and a first switch for providing intercept and redirect functions associated with automatic voice messaging. The first switch is connected to a second switch via one or more digital communication links. A second caller-controlled interface unit is located in one of the digital communication links for providing intercept and redirect functions associated with automatic voice messaging. According to the invention, each of the interface units includes arbitration control circuits responsive to predetermined signaling to determine which of the interface units will provide the intercept and redirect functions upon call initiation to the called station by a caller at the calling station. The predetermined signaling is preferably provided in a common channel signaling No. 7 (SS7) protocol.

Automatic voice/data messaging enhancements

The present invention describes an apparatus for use in a telephone network having a calling station connectable to a first switch means and a called station connectable to a second switch means, with the first and second switch means being connectable by a link. Generally, the apparatus comprises an interface having a passive in-line monitor connected in the link for detecting entry of a predetermined service access code by a user of the calling station or a user of the called station after call completion between the calling station and the called station and before either of said users goes on-hook. Upon entry of the predetermined service access code, a speech circuit of the apparatus issues a predetermined prompt to the user of the calling station and/or the user of the called station. Processor control circuitry of the apparatus is then responsive to entry of predetermined signaling by one of the users following the issuance of the prompt for providing a predetermined service controlled and paid for by the user requesting the predetermined service. Alternatively, if the parties are familiar with the service offering, the prompt is not required.

Method and apparatus for providing proactive call services following

A line interface unit for caller-controlled receipt and delivery of voice and/or data meassages over a telephone system having a voice/data message facility, the message facility connectible to at least one calling station and a called station and normally having access prevention circuitry for preventing storage and forwarding of voice/data messages unless predetermined access codes are received and verified by the circuitry. In the preferred embodiment, the unit comprises a switch connected to a central office and having first and second positions and wherein signals are connected directly between the calling station and the central office when the switch is in the first position. The interface unit also includes circuitry for signaling the message facility and circuitry for monitoring call progress upon call initiation to the called station. Microprocessor-based control circuitry responds to detection of a predetermined condition at the called station upon call initiation, to detection of a first predetermined code from the calling station indicating that the caller desires to leave a voice/data message for the called station, and to detection of a second predetermined code from the voice message facility, to establish a connection between the calling station and the message facility. Thereafter, a special data string is transmitted to the message facility which, upon receipt thereby, facilitates barrierless entry in and out of the message facility without the predetermined access codes.
