A turbocharger turbine housing particulate debris trap for collecting all unwanted exhaust gas entrained particles before engagement with the turbine wheel. The trap can be located anywhere in the exhaust system upstream of the turbine wheel and is designed to take advantage of both inertial and gravitational forces. Systems for purging the trap of collected debris is also disclosed.

A rotor-shaft assembly includes a ceramic solid hubbed turbine rotor having an integral stub shaft interference fit within one end of a generally cylindrically shaped sleeve member. The sleeve member defines a hub portion adapted to mate with a piston ring seal and a coaxial bore therethrough. The interference fit, which is defined by the change in the diameter of the bore, schedules the compressive forces acting on the stub shaft. A metal shaft is brazed within the other end of the sleeve member in a torque transmitting relationship.

Ceramic rotor-shaft attachment

A rotor shaft assembly for use in turbochargers includes a metal shaft having a generally cylindrical female cavity therein concentrically distributed about the axis thereof; and a solid hubbed ceramic turbine wheel having a male stub shaft insertable into the female cavity. The axis of the male stub shafted ceramic turbine is coextensive with the axis of the shaft and the stub shaft is mated with the female receptacle and joined by an adhesive. A turbocharger includes a rotor-shaft assembly of the above-described type, in which the metal to ceramic adhesive joint is located in the turbocharger center housing.

A control arrangement is provided for controlling the operation of an hydraulic assist turbocharger of the type including an hydraulic turbine driven by an hydraulic fluid under pressure to supplementally drive a turbocharger during engine operating conditions when supplemental air flow is required. The control arrangement includes a dual function control valve responsive to engine speed and load to regulate the supply of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic turbine in accordance with engine air flow requirements.

A turbocharger system for supplying charge air to a combustion engine includes a nonventilated hydraulic turbine mounted directly on the turbocharger shaft, and an auxiliary combustor mounted in-line between the engine and the turbocharger. The nonventilated hydraulic turbine is selectively driven by a high pressure hydraulic fluid to drive the turbocharger for supplying air to the auxiliary combustor, which in turn supplementally drives the turbocharger throughout a broad range of engine operation to provide additional air flow to the engine when required.

A turbocharger system for supplying charge air to a combustion engine includes a nonventilated hydraulic turbine mounted directly on the turbocharger shaft. The nonventilated hydraulic turbine is selectively driven by a high pressure hydraulic fluid to drive supplementally the turbocharger during engine operating conditions when additional air flow to the engine is required.

A rotor has a blade cascade coacting with fluid in the path to transfer energy therebetween.
