A spalling process can be employed to generate a fracture at a predetermined depth within a high quality crystalline nitride substrate, such as a bulk GaN substrate. A first crystalline conductive film layer can be separated, along the line of fracture, from the crystalline nitride substrate and subsequently bonded to a layered stack including a traditional lower-cost substrate. If the spalled surface of the first crystalline conductive film layer is exposed in the resulting structure, the structure can act as a substrate on which high quality GaN-based devices can be grown.

A swimming pool cover apparatus is described whereby the pool cover may be extended and retracted through a power source. The apparatus includes a drive shaft circumscribed by a pair of sleeves. Each of the sleeves may be selectively rotated through a double-dog clutch system connected to the drive shaft. A cover-collecting drum is connected to one of the sleeves. A pair of cord-collecting reels rotatably circumscribe the other sleeve. Controlled rotation of the two cord-collecting reels is achieved through a ratchet and spring-biased pawl system. This system also permits slippage of either of the two cord-collecting reels when the tension on either one of the reels becomes excessive.

A retractable cover designed for use in covering the bed of a conventional pick up truck. The cover includes a pair of beaded side edges wherein each of the beaded side edges slidably engage a track or longitudinal opening molded in a slide member mounted to the side walls of a bed on a pick up truck. One end of the cover is fixed to a spring loaded, continuously biased, roller rotatably mounted to the forward section of the truck's bed in a plane below the plane of the extended truck cover. A flap is also provided to cover the roller as well as a means to seal the flap to the truck cover when fully extended. A locking mechanism is fixed at or near the tailgate of the truck's bed to maintain the extended, spring biased, cover in an extended and locked position.

The present invention is directed to a novel pulley assembly used in connection with conventional swimming pool cover systems of the type utilizing draw cords carried by a dual-channel track. The pulley assembly is comprised of a pulley housing and a pulley such that the pulley housing is adapted for securement at the end of a section of track. In a preferred embodiment, the housing is provided with a tang-like projection adapted to be received in a slot in the track between the two channels so as to maintain the pulley system in proper alignment with respect to the track and the pulley is rotatably secured within a cylindrical cavity having sufficient clearance to permit free rotation of the pulley, but the clearance being less than the diameter of the draw cord so that the draw cord will remain engaged with the pulley. The housing is also preferably provided with a pair of bores or grooves, one of which defines a path for the draw cord to the pulley, and the second of which defines a path from the pulley, so that the path of the draw cord is a substantially continuous U-shape.

A wheel assembly for use with extendible and retractable swimming pool covers having a raised leading edge. The apparatus of the present invention preferably comprises two rigid arms which each have a wheel attached to one end thereof. The other end of the arms are rotatably connected to an expandable plug which is adapted to fit into one end of the horizontal leading edge carrier member of the pool cover. A bolt passes through a washer, through an axial bore in the expandable plug, and through holes in the ends of both arms so as to connect all of the component parts together. A wing nut is then tightened onto the end of the bolt, thereby causing the expandable plug to expand within the leading edge carrier member. The wheel assembly is thus secured to the end of the carrier member, with the arms being prevented from further rotation after installation.

A novel swimming pool cover apparatus and method which utilizes adjustable side gores to eliminate undue tension in the swimming pool cover material. The apparatus includes a flexible, generally rectangular swimming pool cover sheet having beaded side edges and which is pre-cut with oversized side gores adjacent the leading edge thereof. The beaded side edges of the swimming pool cover sheet are slidably received into channels which are formed in parallel track members mounted on the pool deck adjacent to opposite sides of the swimming pool. The leading edge of the swimming pool cover is also provided with a beaded edge and is supported by a rigid carrier member having an open channel formed along the rearward side thereof. The bead of the leading edge of the cover sheet is slidably received into the channel formed in the rigid carrier member, and the carrier member is suspended at each end by respective wheel assemblies.

A braking system has been designed for controlling the rotational momentum of a cover collecting drum during the extention and retraction sequence of a motorized swimming pool cover apparatus. The braking system provides a compact, substantially even roll on the collecting drum. The swimming pool cover apparatus includes a rotatable and axially slidable shaft supportably carried by a number of end bearing standards. A fixed, free wheeling, cover collecting drum is carried on the shaft along with a pair of free wheeling, draw cord collecting reels positioned at each end of the drum. A clutch-like system is provided whereby the drum and the reels can be selectively engaged and/or disengaged from the shaft by rotating the shaft first in one direction then in the other. To maintain a desired, preselected tension on the pool cover and thereby produce a compact, even roll on the cover collecting drum the rotational momentum of the reels and the cover collecting drum is controlled during operation by the application of an adjustable braking force to each of the reels. This braking force is achieved by squeezing or pinching a pair of brake shoes against the side walls of each of the reels. Since the force applied to the reel's side walls is adjustable, the braking force applied to the reels may either be identical or dissimilar depending upon the type and degree of compactness or tightness desired. A unique feature of this braking system is that the desired amount of force can be applied concomitantly to both side walls of each of the reels and thereby insure a uniform roll on the cover collecting drum.

A swimming pool cover constructed from a flexible impervious material wherein the leading or forward edge thereof is raised above the pool's surface. The above swimming pool cover is adapted with a longitudinal or lateral beaded side edge which is slidably held within a longitudinal open channel or track cut into a slideway member mounted to the deck or longitudinal margins of a swimming pool. The leading or forward edge of the cover is also beaded or thickened so that it may be received and held within a track or channel fixed to a bowed tubular member. Fixed to either end of the bowed tubular member are pivotally mounted legs having rotatably mounted tandem wheels fixed thereto. To prevent the bowed member from 'rolling' after the pool cover has been extended, an outwardly extending stop member is fixed to the outer wall of each end of the tubular member for contacting one of the leg members and thereby limit the bowed member's 'rolling' action. A link chain is fixed to the lower ends of each of the legs of the tandem wheels to limit leg extension. To prevent the pool cover from being overly stressed and thereby inadvertently damaged during use, a pair of side gores are inserted along each of the forward side edges of the pool cover to permit it to be raised without causing excessive stress on the forward section of the pool cover. A third gore is provided in the central, forward section of the pool cover for draining the extended pool cover of any water which may collect thereon.

A protective swimming pool covering apparatus is disclosed wherein the apparatus includes a flexible impervious cover sheet capable of being extended and retracted over a swimming pool. Each lateral side of the cover sheet is adapted with a longitudinally beaded side edge which is slideably held in a longitudinal open channel or track cut into a slideway member fixed to the longitudinal margins of the swimming pool. The longitudinal opening of the slideway means is sized such that it is slightly smaller than the diameter of the beaded side edge such that under normal operating conditions the bead will be slideably held within the track or channel. However, under conditions of excessive lateral stress, the bead will be sufficiently compressed and be pulled through the opening and away from the channel. In addition, the end sections of the slideway means is adapted with a stationary channeled guide piece having a pair of flared end sections and a longitudinal side opening. The stationary guide piece is mounted such that the channels of the guide piece and the slideway means are in aligned registry with each other. The longitudinal side opening of the stationary guide piece is substantially smaller than the longitudinal side opening of the slideway means making disengagement of the bead from the channel opening substantially more difficult than that from the slideway means.
