A spinning process for poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and an analytical method wherein the process provides an aging resistant poly(trimethylene terephthalate) yarn and the analytical method provides predictability to the process.

Processes for making poly(trimethyelene terephthalate) yarn are provided. The process includes extruding a polyester polymer through a spinneret to form non-round filaments at a spinning speed less than 4500 mpm and a temperature between about 255&deg; C. and about 275&deg; C. The polyester polymer composition includes at least 85 mole percent poly(trimethylene terephthalate) wherein at least 85 mole percent of the repeating units consist of trimethylene units, and the polyester polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.70 dl/g.

Such yarns may be used as direct-use yarns and as draw-feed yarns for preparing drawn flat yarns and draw-textured yarns.

Drawing, especially cold-drawing, or hot-drawing or other heat-treatments of spin-oriented crystalline polyester filaments, and particularly polyester feed yarns, that have been prepared by spinning at speeds of, e.g., 4 km/min, and have low shrinkage and no natural draw ratio in the conventional sense, provides useful technique for obtaining uniform drawn filaments of desired denier and thereby provides improved flexibility to obtain filaments and yarns of various sub-deniers.
