Mapping out restricted areas on at least one disk of a data storage device. The at least one disk includes overlapping tracks with a plurality of sectors for storing data. A first addressing is provided for the plurality of sectors on the at least one disk. Defective sectors of the plurality of sectors are detected and mapped out from the first addressing. A restricted area is calculated including sectors of the plurality of sectors and the restricted area is mapped out from a second addressing.

Mapping of shingled magnetic recording media

A data storage device comprises storage media and a controller. The storage media may comprise a plurality of media defects, at least some of the media defects being listed in a grown defect list and a primary defect list comprising a plurality of entries sorted in an order according to physical address locations. The controller may be configured to generate a push down list from the primary defect list and the grown defect list by populating the push down list with entries from the primary defect list such that the push down list entries maintain the order; translating each entry in the grown defect list to a physical address location; and inserting each translated physical address location with updated push down count into the push down list.

Methods and devices for efficiently updating the push down list in a storage device

A disk drive is disclosed wherein a plurality of zones are defined on first and second disk surfaces, wherein each zone comprises a plurality of data tracks. Data is written to the data tracks of a first plurality of the zones on the first and second disk surfaces in an interleaved manner, in a first radial direction, and in a shingled manner. Data is written to the data tracks of a second plurality of the zones on the first and second disk surfaces in an interleaved manner, in a second radial direction opposite the first radial direction, and in a shingled manner. At least one guard band is defined at a boundary between a first zone and a second zone in the second plurality of zones on the first disk surface, wherein the guard band comprises at least one unused data track.

Disk drive defining guard bands to support zone sequentiality when butterfly writing shingled data tracks

A multi-head disk drive is disclosed comprising a plurality of disk surfaces, and a head assembly comprising a plurality of heads, wherein each disk surface comprises a plurality of data zones, and each data zone having a data transfer rate different from the other zones of the respective disk surface. A controller is operable to sequentially write a sequence of data blocks to the plurality of disk surfaces in accordance with a list of head-zone combinations, each head-zone combination corresponding to one of the heads and one of the data zones of the respective disk surface. The head-zone combinations in the list are ordered from highest data transfer rate to lowest data transfer rate, and each disk surface comprises a pivot point defining a direction of writing data in the data zones from one of an outer diameter toward a middle diameter and an inner diameter toward the middle diameter.

Systems and methods for improving sequential data rate performance using sorted data zones for butterfly format

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a first and second disk surfaces. A defect list is generated comprising a plurality of entries, wherein each entry comprises a track number comprising a defect. A first cluster across the first and second disk surfaces is identified, wherein a maximum data track number Xin the first cluster on the first disk surface is less than a maximum data track number Yin the first cluster on the second disk surface. A second cluster across the first and second disk surfaces is identified, wherein a maximum data track number Xin the second cluster on the first disk surface is less than a maximum data track number Yin the second cluster on the second disk surface. An entry from the defect list is selected in response to X, and the entry of the defect list is mapped into the second cluster.
