An air turbine starter is provided and includes a rotor including turbine blades, which is rotatable about a rotational axis, a housing including a portion thereof radially surrounding the turbine blades to define a pathway along which fluids flow to interact with the turbine blades and a containment ring affixed to an exterior of the portion of the housing radially surrounding the turbine blades.

A pawl and ratchet assembly including a rotatable pawl, a spring, a ratchet, and a member. The rotatable pawl is configured to rotate about a fixed axis during operation. The spring urges the pawl towards the ratchet. The member interferes with the travel of the pawl during operation. The member is non-magnetized.

A locking plate for use in an air turbine starter has a lock plate body including an oil slinger extending away from a base. The base is positioned on an outer peripheral surface of a clutch frame. The slinger extends away from the base for a distance, and a ratio of the distance to a thickness of the base is ten and thirty. A clutch and air turbine starter, and a method of assembly are also disclosed.

A brake assembly () for an air turbine starter () includes a brake cylinder () located in the air turbine starter (). A brake piston () is located at least partially within the brake cylinder () and slidable therein. A biasing member () biases the brake piston () toward a turbine wheel () of the air turbine starter () applying a braking force to the turbine wheel () and defining a piston chamber () between the turbine wheel () and the brake piston (). A through opening () in the brake piston () into the piston chamber () is configured such that a flow of fluid through the through opening () into the piston chamber () applies a force to the brake piston () sufficient to overcome the bias thereby allowing rotation of the turbine wheel ().
