In a process for carbonitriding metallic components (), provision is made of at least one carburization phase (CC), in which the metallic component () is carburized with a carbon-donating gas. In addition, provision is made of a nitriding phase (C, C, C), which is assigned to the carburization phase (D, D) and precedes the carburization phase (D, D). Here, in the nitriding phase, the metallic component () is nitrided by means of a nitrogen-donating gas at least superficially at at least one surface region () of the metallic component (). It is thereby possible to avoid an excessive concentration of carbon, and therefore component failure is prevented and it is possible to dispense with costly remachining steps, e.g. grinding.

Process for carbonitriding metallic components

The invention relates to a method for carbonitriding at least one component () in a treatment chamber (), in which at least one process gas () is introduced into the treatment chamber (), wherein a hydrogen content () is detected in an atmosphere developing in the treatment chamber () and is maintained in a desired range () at least at intervals by influencing of the amount of the process gas () that is fed.

An installation for the dry transformation of a material microstructure of semi-finished products, especially for dry bainitization, includes a quenching chamber and a microstructure transformation chamber situated downstream from it in the processing flow, in each case the inner space of the two chambers having applied to it excess gas pressure, at least during the respective method step, for the transformation of the material microstructure. Device(s) are provided for maintaining a minimum excess gas pressure acting on the semi-finished product, during the moving of the semi-finished product from the quenching chamber into the microstructure transformation chamber.

A method for carburizing workpieces made of steel, particularly workpieces having outer and inner surfaces, the workpiece being held at a temperature in the range of 850 to 1050&#xb0; C. in an atmosphere containing a gaseous hydrocarbon. At least two different gaseous hydrocarbons are used and/or the workpiece is alternatingly held in the atmosphere containing the gaseous hydrocarbon during a carburizing pulse and in an atmosphere free of hydrocarbon during a diffusion phase. Also described is a use of the method.
