An internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle includes a crankshaft, a camshaft, a cylinder, a piston movably disposed in the cylinder and coupled to the crankshaft for driving the crankshaft, a first gas exchange valve which is assigned to the cylinder, a first valve clearance compensation device, where via the first valve clearance compensation device the first gas exchange valve is displaceable between a first open position and a first closed position by a first cam of the camshaft, and a control unit. The control unit is configured to align the camshaft such that the first valve clearance compensation device is pressure-loaded in the idle state of the crankshaft by a plateau area assigned to the first cam to hold the first gas exchange valve in the first open position.

An internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle includes a combustion chamber with a gas exchange valve which is movable between an open position and a first closed position. The gas exchange valve is movable on its path from the open position in a direction of the first closed position into an intermediate position located between the open position and the first closed position and is holdable in the intermediate position at least during a part of a compression cycle of the combustion chamber following the open position of the gas exchange valve and is movable into a second closed position following the intermediate position. The part comprises more than a half of the compression cycle and less than a whole of the compression cycle. The gas exchange valve is an inlet valve via which the combustion chamber is supplyable at least with air.

In an internal combustion engine comprising a mechanical charger in the form of a positive displacement compressor connected to the engine intake duct for supplying compressed air to the engine and a turbo-compound including an exhaust gas turbine connected to the engine exhaust duct for converting energy remaining in the exhaust gas to power, the exhaust gas turbine being connected to the engine via a reduction gear drive, the mechanical charger and the turbo-compound are coupled to the engine by a common belt drive including a first belt pulley mounted on the crankshaft of the engine, a second belt pulley mounted on the shaft of the reduction gear drive, and a third belt pulley mounted on the shaft of the mechanical charger.

An exhaust system of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, particularly in a motor vehicle, has a first exhaust-gas line for receiving the exhaust gas from a first cylinder group of the internal combustion engine, a second exhaust-gas line for receiving the exhaust gas from a second cylinder group of the internal combustion engine, an exhaust-gas expansion chamber and an exhaust-gas outlet line, leading out of the exhaust-gas expansion chamber. The first and second exhaust-gas lines lead into an exhaust-gas mixing chamber which is coupled in gas flow communication with the exhaust-gas expansion chamber, so that exhaust gas can expand via the perforation of the exhaust-gas mixing chamber, into the exhaust gas expansion chamber.
