In a process for preparing a polyamide based on dicarboxylic acids and diamines in an extruder, a solid mixture comprising a monomer mixture composed of 50 mol % of dicarboxylic acid mixture composed of from 60 to 88 % by weight of terephthalic acid and from 12 to 40% by weight of isophthalic acid, in which up to 20% by weight of the dicarboxylic acid mixture may also be replaced by other dicarboxylic acids, and 50 mol % of hexamethylenediamine which may be up to 20% by weight replaced by other C-diamines, in a corotatory twin-screw extruder for a residence time of from 10 seconds to 30 minutes, is heated to a temperature in the range from 150 to 400&#xb0; C. while removing steam and if appropriate diamines through venting orifices.

The invention relates to thermoplastic moulding materials containing A) between 20 and 97 wt. % of a thermoplastic polyester; B) between 1 and 40 wt. % of a phosphinic acid salt and/or a diphosphinic acid salt and/or the polymers thereof, constituent B) having an average particle size (value d) which is smaller than 10 &#x3bc;m; C) between 1 and 30 wt. % of a nitrogenated flameproofing agent; D) between 0 and 5 wt. % of at least one ester or amide of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids having between 10 and 40 C atoms and aliphatic saturated alcohols or amines having between 2 and 40 C atoms; and E) between 0 and 60 wt. % of other additives. The total weight percent of constituents A) to E) amounts to 100%.
