An interactive system enables users to generate and submit lists of items (e.g., products selected from an electronic catalog) for viewing by other users. The user-generated lists are selectively suggested to users of the system based (or based in part) on ratings of the user-generated lists. These ratings may, for example, be based on explicit ratings of the lists by users, and/or measures of how effective the respective lists are at driving purchases of items. In some contexts, the system may select one or more user-generated lists to present to a user based on a set of items purchased, viewed, or otherwise selected by the user, or based on the results of a search query submitted by the user.

Service for accepting and selectively exposing user-generated lists

A method and system for identifying advertisement and search term combinations for placing advertisements along with search results. The advertisement system includes multiple advertisement generators that automatically create advertisement sets that each contain one or more advertisements, one or more search terms, and a link to an advertised item. The advertisement system also includes an advertisement manager that receives the advertisement sets from the advertisement generators, identifies a fee to be associated with each advertisement set, and selects which advertisement sets are to be submitted to various search engine services. The advertisement system may also include a fee calculator that generates a fee amount or bid for each advertisement set.

Method and system for generating and placing keyword-targeted advertisements

The measures of effectiveness may be considered in selecting particular lists to suggest.

In various embodiments, users generating lists may add supplemental commentary about the items and other personalizing information. When a user of the data repository submits a search query, items returned in the query's results are interpreted to be items of interest to the user, and in response, one or more lists determined to be similar to the items of interest are presented to the user.

Systems and methods that use search queries to identify related lists

A full color process image that can be printed with cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks is produced as a duotone image using only two colors of ink. Color data defining the colors used in the full color image serve as input to a process that maps the colors into a duotone gamut defined by the two colors of ink that will be used to produce the duotone image. A user is able to select 0, 1, or 2 colors of ink for the duotone image, and the software program automatically chooses the remaining ink or inks so as to reproduce the image as accurately as possible; the software also produces the appropriate color separations automatically. In addition, the paper color can be specified by the user or optimally determined by the optimizing process of the software to optimize the duotone image reproducing a full color image that has little white. The paper color provides a free third color. A black separation can also optionally be included when printing the duotone image to expand the range of luminance available. When black ink is used, some amount of black is subtracted from the each color of the original image before the optimization and mapping process is applied, and the black separation is determined to add back the appropriate amount of black when printing the duotone image. The duotone images produced by the method are relatively high-quality, economical alternatives to full-color printing.
