An interconnect for electrically connecting two members having conductive wiring on respective surfaces thereof includes first and second hinge parts of electrically insulating material which are mutually pivotable when placed in a mating position. The hinge parts have mutually contacting electrically conducting portions when the first and second hinge parts are in their mating position, and the electrically conducting portions are in electrical contact with the conductive wiring on the respective surfaces of the two members. The conductive wiring is arranged on the two members such that when the members are secured, for instance, to assemblies to be interconnected, the conductive wiring aligns with and contacts the desired wires or traces on the interconnected assemblies. In one embodiment, the hinge assemblies are manufactured from a substrate of an electrically insulating polymer matrix which is doped with an electrically insulating fibrous filler capable of heat conversion to an electrically conductive fibrous filler to form a conductive trace. The conductive trace of one assembly is electrically connected to the conductive trace of the other assembly by mating portions of said hinge assemblies, each mating portion including a conductive layer on a surface thereof in direct electrical communication with a corresponding conductive layer on opposing mating portions of said other hinge assembly to provide electrical connection between the conductive traces of said hinge assemblies through a pivotal movement of said one hinge assembly relative to said other hinge assembly. The hinge assemblies may be pivotally interconnected by a hinge pin or by a snap fit relationship between male protrusions on one assembly and female sockets on the other assembly.

A method of forming at least one electrically conductive path in a plastic substrate comprising providing a thermoplastic substrate having a melting point below 325.degree. C., coating said substrate with a precursor of a catalyst for the electroless deposition of conductive metals, said catalyst precursor having a decomposition temperature below the melting point of said thermoplastic and within the temperature range where said thermoplastic softens, heating the portion of said coated thermoplastic substrate corresponding to said conductive path to a temperature sufficient to decompose said catalyst precursor to said catalyst and soften said thermoplastic; said substrate, catalyst precursor and temperature being selected such that on heating to the temperature the precursor decomposes to the catalyst, the thermoplastic softens and at least partially melts without substantial decomposition to enable the catalyst to penetrate the surface of the thermoplastic and become anchored thereto to provide nucleation sites for the subsequent electroless deposition of conductive metal and depositing conductive metal by electroless deposition on said heated portion to form said conductive path.

Apparatus and method for forming an electrostatic latent image on an imaging member having a photoconductive insulating layer has a voltage sensitive corona charging device with a corona generating electrode and a control electrode positioned in charging relationship to the photoconductive insulating layer, means to energize the charging device to charge the photoconductive insulating layer to a first level comprising means to apply a corona generating voltage to the corona generating electrode and to apply a control voltage of a first magnitude to the control electrode, and means to expose the photoconductive insulating layer to an image pattern simultaneously while the charging device is energized.

An elastomeric cleaning blade supported in cleaning relationship with the imaging surface of an electrophotographic device, for removal of residual toner on the surface, is provided with a cleaning edge having predetermined and detectable characteristics of the cleaning blade. An electrical signal is applied to the cleaning edge, and variations in the electrical characteristics are monitored. Change in the electrical characteristics of the cleaning blade edge will be highly indicative of a cleaning blade failure, or impending failure. A signal based on the variation in electrical characteristics may be produced to create a warning indication or cause a corrective response to occur.

An electrical component is made from an electrically insulating polymer matrix filled with electrically insulating fibrous filler which is capable of heat conversion to electrically conducting fibrous filler and has at least one continuous electrically conductive path formed in the matrix by the in situ heat conversion of the electrically insulating fibrous filler. In a preferred embodiment, the fibrous filler is thermally stabilized polyacrylonitrile fibers and the conductive path is formed by in situ heat converted thermally stabilized polyacrylonitrile fibers which have been converted by directing a laser beam through a mask having a predetermined pattern to melt the polymer and to heat convert the thermally stabilized polyacrylonitrile fibers.

A contact brush charging device together with a method for charging an insulating layer are provided wherein the charging brush comprises a plurality of resiliently, flexible thin fibers having an electrical resistivity of from about 10.sup.2 ohms-cm to about 10.sup.6 ohms-cm and being substantially resistivity stable to changes in relative humidity and temperature. In a preferred embodiment the plurality of fibers are arranged in a uniform distribution of fibers along the length of the brush and comprise partially carbonized polyacrylonitrile fibers having an electrical resistivity from about 10.sup.3 ohms-cm to about 10.sup.5 ohms-cm and being substantially homogeneous in composition.

Contact brush charging

A charging system for a reproduction machine is provided comprising a photoreceptor member having the property of dark injecting only a single side of mobile carrier from an injection layer; an alternating current voltage source operating at a frequency f; and a bias roller charging member electrically connected to the alternating current voltage source and comprised of a deformable conductive material supported in deforming engagement with the photoreceptor member during relative movement of the photoreceptor and the bias roller charging member. The bias roller is maintained in contact with any given area on the photoreceptor for a period greater than or equal to 1/f the bias roller charging member to provide uniform charging and avoid strobing.

Alternating current inductive charging of a photoreceptor

A corona generating device for depositing negative charge on an imaging surface carried on conductive substrate comprises at least one elongated conductive corona discharge electrode, means to connect the electrode to a corona generating potential source, at least one element adjacent the corona discharge electrode capable of adsorbing nitrogen oxide species generated once the corona generating electrode is energized and capable of desorbing nitrogen oxide species once that electrode is not energized, the element being plated with a substantially continuous thin layer of lead to neutralize the nitrogen oxide species when generated. In a preferred embodiment the corona discharge electrode comprises a thin wire coated at least in a discharge area with a dielectric material and the at least one element comprises a conductive shield and an insulating housing having two sides adjacent the shield to define the longitudinal opening to permit ions emitted from the electrode to be directed toward a surface to be charged, both the shield and the two sides of the housing being plated with a substantially continuous thin layer of lead.

Corona generating device

A corona generating device for depositing negative charge on an imaging surface carried on conductive substrate comprises at least one elongated conductive corona discharge electrode, means to connect the electrode to a corona generating potential source, at least one element adjacent the corona discharge electrode capable of adsorbing nitrogen oxide species generated once the corona generating electrode is energized and capable of desorbing nitrogen oxide species once that electrode is not energized, the element being coated with a substantially continuous thin layer of a paint containing reactive metal particles which will combine with the nitrogen oxide species, the reactive metal being present in the paint in an amount sufficient to neutralize the nitrogen oxide species when generated. In a preferred embodiment the corona discharge electrode comprises a thin wire coated at least in a discharge area with a dielectric material and the at least one element comprises a conductive shield and an insulating housing having two sides adjacent the shield to define the longitudinal opening to permit ions emitted from the electrode to be directed toward a surface to be charged. Both the shield and the two sides of the housing being coated with a substantially continuous thin layer of paint containing reactive metal particles. Preferably the reactive metal particles comprises lead, copper, nickel, gold, silver or zinc or mixtures thereof.

A method for making conductive brushes which comprises providing a rotatable cylindrical mandrel having a plurality of longitudinal recesses on its surface, and winding electrically conductive fibers from a supply around the mandrel by rotating the mandrel. The brush backing or base may be formed by a number of methods utilizing the recesses on the surface of the mandrel. In one embodiment, the brush backing is formed by placing a strip of a conductive material in each of the recesses, and after the conductive fibers have been wound thereover, the conductive fiber windings are caused to adhere to each other by adhesive means and another strip of conductive material is placed over the windings to mate with the strip in the recess to form the backing for the conductive brush. Individual conductive brushes are obtained by cutting the conductive fibers in the longitudinal direction of the mandrel. Other embodiments of the method for producing the backing or base of the conductive brushes, including one embodiment in which a mandrel without recesses is used, are also disclosed.
