A dimeric ionic liquid that enhances and improves the performance and durability of a fuel cell catalyst. The dimeric ionic liquid comprises 1,1-(butane-1, 4-diyl)bis(9-methyl-3,4,6,7,8,9-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-1-ium 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluorobutane-1-sulfonate. Membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) employing the dimeric ionic liquid are also disclosed.

Protonated dimeric ionic liquid to enhance performance of membrane assembly electrode (MEA)

The present disclosure pertains to methods and systems for separating olefins from a mixture that includes olefins and non-olefins. The methods include associating the mixture with a support that is embedded with an ionic liquid and a metal ion. The ionic liquid prevents the substantial reduction of the metal ion by reducing agents while the metal ion mediates the transport of the olefin through the support by selectively and reversibly coupling with the olefin. In some embodiments, the support may be in the form of supported ionic liquid porous membranes, and the ionic liquid may be held within the pores of the support by capillary forces. In some embodiments, the support may be in the form of a composite, and the ionic liquid may be dispersed throughout the composite. In some embodiments, the metal ion may be dissolved in the ionic liquid and dispersed throughout the support.

Systems and methods for separation of olefins from mixtures that contain reducing agents

An electrolyte and a method to electroplate a metal on a substrate using the electrolyte are described. The electrolyte includes an imidazolium compound, a metal salt, and water. The imidazolium compound has formula (I) wherein R, R, R, R, and Rare each independently selected from an H atom and an organic radical. Lis a compatible anion. The metal salt can include but is not limited to salts of the metals Li, Mg, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Bi, La, Ce, Al, Ag, Au, Ga, V, In, Nb, Mo, and W.

Ionic liquids comprising heteraromatic anions

A secondary ionomer that enhances activity and stability of a cathode catalyst in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell includes the ionic liquid, 1-methyl-2,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-9-ium 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluorobutane-1-sulfonate ([MTBD][CFSO]). When contacting the catalyst, [MTBD][CFSO] enhances catalyst activity and stability more effectively than previously known ionomers, likely by preventing oxide formation and water adsorption at the catalyst surface. The disclosed secondary ionomer is thus most effective when completely coating the catalyst.

Disclosed herein are ionic liquid compounds, complexes and compositions suitable for use as refrigerants. Methods and systems for heating and/or cooling, including vapor compression heating or cooling systems, including such refrigerants are also disclosed. Preferred ionic liquids include those having anions selected from pyrrolide, pyrazolide, triazolide, imidazolide, benzimidazolide, and indolide, and cations selected from phosphonium, ammonium, pyrrolidinium, imidazolium, and pyridinium.

Compounds, complexes, compositions, methods and systems for heating and cooling

Disclosed herein are methods for COcapture that use phase change ionic liquids (PCILs) to remove the COfrom flue gas or other gas streams containing CO. PCILs have high COuptake and form a liquid PCIL-COcomplex when they react with C( ). When the liquid PCIL-COcomplex is heated to regenerate the solid PCIL material by removing the carbon dioxide, part of the heat needed to release the COcan be supplied by the heat of fusion of the PCIL as it solidifies. Utilization of the heat of fusion of the PCIL to assist in its own regeneration can substantially reduce the parasitic energy loss associated with post-combustion COcapture.

Methods of enhancing the thermal stability of a compound, particularly an ionic compound, using the aminopyridinium or piperidino pyridinium cations, are also presented. Compositions having an expanded liquidus range of from about &#x2212;73&#xb0; C. to about 444&#xb0; C. are also described. Solvents, heat transfer fluids, and lubricants having improved thermal stability characteristics and an expanded and improved liquidus range are also disclosed.
