A bone compacting device for compacting cancellous bone within a bone cavity, the bone compacting device including a body having a plurality of segments, wherein each segment is adjacent to at least one adjacent segment between a first end and a second end of the body, and wherein each of the plurality of segments is independently expandable to contact the cancellous bone.

Bone compactor

An acetabular cup prosthesis designed to customize the fit and stability of an acetabular cup in deficient acetabulae without excessive reaming of good bone surrounding the deficiency. The acetabular cup prosthesis generally comprises a cup-shaped body portion, an extension, and a liner. The extension is preferably produced at selected angles, which are appropriate to various acetabular defects, and is designed to connect to the cup-shaped body portion. The body portion and extension are secured to the bone and the liner is inserted within the body portion. Those surfaces of the body portion and extension contacting the surface of the bone are preferably porous surfaces that may have also been coated with a coating to enhance bone growth.

Acetabular cup prosthesis with extension for deficient acetabulum

An adjustable trial prosthesis or prosthetic component provides a surgeon with the capability of efficiently and accurately examining a joint's functioning without having to remove a trial prosthesis insert and replace it with another sterilized insert. The adjustable trial has a first surface that approximates the top surface of the corresponding permanent prosthesis and a second surface that engages a bone. A distance adjustment mechanism can alter the distance between the first and second surfaces. The distance adjustment mechanism can include a screw oriented generally between the two surfaces or other distance adjustment mechanisms such as a fluid filled bladder. The adjustable trial can include force transducers to provide information on forces within the joint. To assist a surgeon with the alignment of portions of the musculo-skeletal system, a line of strong light is provided. The light source can be a laser or other suitable light source which is combined with appropriate optics. A balancing apparatus can be used to assess relative tensions on peri-articular soft tissue structures. The balance has a support that is adapted for rigid attachment directly or indirectly to a bone.

Arthroplasty trial prosthesis alignment devices and associated methods

An implantable intramedullary bone lengthening device for correction of limb length deficiencies without a need for transcutaneous connections. The implantable intramedullary bone lengthening nail has an implantable housing, an adjustment mechanism attached to the telescoping cylinder housing, and a drive assembly attached to the housing and the adjustment mechanism for transmitting an expansion force to the adjustment mechanism. The implantable housing may be sealed, encapsulating the unit. The intramedullary bone lengthening nail is inserted into the intramedullary cavity of a bone, which may have been enlarged by reaming. The implantable housing of the intramedullary nail is formed from two telescoping cylinders and is affixed at either end to the bone using pins. The adjustment mechanism is attached to both cylinders of the housing and includes a mechanism for expanding the nail and a ratcheting mechanism for regulating the expansion. The drive assembly includes a shape memory alloy to provide an expansion force. The drive mechanism transmits the expansion force in response to an external signal to the adjustment mechanism.
