A drilling system includes an internal assembly comprising a chassis, a flow diverter, or both, and a strain gauge coupled to the chassis, the flow diverter, or both, in which the strain gauge is configured to output a signal associated with a strain deformation of the internal assembly. The drilling system also includes a drill collar coupled to the internal assembly, in which the internal assembly extends along the drill collar, and the drill collar encloses the internal assembly of the internal assembly such that a strain deformation of the drill collar causes the strain deformation of the internal assembly.

Indirect detection of bending of a collar

Systems, methods, tools, and kits are used to reducing shocks and vibrations in tools, including downhole drilling tools. In at least some embodiments, shock and vibration reduction can be enhanced within tools that include an annular chassis within a collar. Existing locations where a gap exists are identified, and clamps, alignment features, joints, or other components can be modified or included to reduce the gap between the chassis and the collar. This includes a tool in which the chassis includes a flow tube or other tool with an axis that is offset from the axis of the chassis. Minimizing the gap can include providing three-point contact, which stabilizes the internal component within the collar. In a downhole environment, a downhole tool that includes the collar and chassis can perform a drilling or other downhole operation, and the internal vibration within the collar is reduced.

Shock and vibration reduction in downhole tools

A stabilizer can include an outer collar, an inner sleeve, and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is changeable between a first mode in which the outer collar is rotationally fixed to the inner sleeve and a second mode in which the outer collar is rotationally isolated relative to the inner sleeve. The stabilizer may include an active or passive system for changing modes. An example passive device may include a magnetic clutch where the detected force overcomes magnetic forces to change mode. The stabilizer can be used to mitigate whirl on a rotating device by switching the rotating device between a rotating mode and a non-rotating mode. In the rotating mode, outer collar may rotate with the inner sleeve. In the non-rotating mode, the outer collar may be rotationally isolated from the inner sleeve.

Anti-whirl stabilization tools

A bottom hole assembly (BHA) of a drill string includes a chassis, a plate coupled to the chassis, and a strain gauge coupled to the plate. The strain gauge is used to output a signal associated with a deformation of the plate. The plate and chassis may be included within a collar that experiences strain, and deformation of the collar may be translated to the chassis and the plate. The plate may experience strain in the form of torsional bending, in-plane bending, out-of-plane bending, axial tension or compression. The plate may include or be coupled to an electronics board that has strain gauges to measure different types of strain in isolation from other types of strain.

A method of mitigating whirl on a rotating device includes detecting force on a outer surface of the rotating device and switching the rotating device between a rotating mode and a non-rotating mode. In the rotating mode, the outer surface may rotate with an inner sleeve. In the non-rotating mode, the outer surface may be rotationally isolated from the inner sleeve. The rotating device may include a stabilizer with an active or passive system for switching modes. The stabilizer can include an outer collar, an inner sleeve, and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is changeable between a first mode in which the outer collar is rotationally fixed to the inner sleeve and a second mode in which the outer collar is rotationally isolated relative to the inner sleeve. An example passive device may include a magnetic clutch where the detected force overcomes magnetic forces to change mode.

Methods for mitigating whirl

A directional drilling system that includes a drill bit capable of drilling a bore through rock. A shaft couples to the drill bit. The shaft transfers rotational power from a motor to the drill bit. A steering system controls a drilling direction of the drill bit. The steering system includes a sleeve coupled to the shaft. A steering pad couples to the sleeve. The steering pad forms a steering angle with the drill bit. Axial movement of the steering pad with respect to the drill bit changes the drilling direction by changing the steering angle.

A method for manufacturing a system for drilling includes receiving a drive shaft for transmitting a torque to a downhole tool and forming a hollow central passage in a tubular wall of the drive shaft extending along a longitudinal axis L. The hollow central passage allows a flow of a drilling fluid through a bearing section of the system. The method further includes disposing an elongated flow diverter in the tubular wall of the drive shaft. The elongated flow diverter has a body that includes axially-spaced apertures distributed along the longitudinal axis L of the drive shaft and the hollow central passage. The distribution of the apertures along the longitudinal axis L reduce the impingement of the drilling fluid while diverting the flow of the drilling fluid from an upstream annulus section of the system to the hollow central passage.

Wired mud motor components, methods of fabricating the same, and downhole motors incorporating the same

A technique facilitates transmission of electric signals across well components which move relative to each other in a wellbore environment. The well components are movably, e.g. rotatably, coupled to each other via one or more conductive bearings. Each conductive bearing has a conductive rolling element which enables relative movement, e.g. rotation, between the well components while simultaneously facilitating transmission of electric signals through the bearing. Portions of the bearing are coupled to each of the well components, and those bearing portions may be connected with electric leads to enable flow of electric signals through the bearing during operation of the system downhole.

System and method for downhole electrical transmission

A technique facilitates control over the orientation of a bottom hole assembly. The bottom hole assembly comprises an orienting tool having a dual-spline drive which, in turn, comprises a first lead screw portion and a second lead screw portion having threads of a first pitch and a second pitch, respectively. A motor is connected to the dual-spline drive to impart rotational motion with respect to the first threads having the first pitch. A difference in pitch between the first pitch and the second pitch enables the rotational motion imparted by the motor to be converted to a slower, higher torque, output via the second lead screw portion. As a result, the orienting tool is able to provide a selective, high torque, low-speed adjustment to the drilling orientation of the bottom hole assembly.

Exemplary embodiments provide systems and methods for minimizing erosion of a transmission cable extending through a downhole drilling assembly. The drilling assembly includes an elongated flow diverter having a plurality of apertures for diverting the drilling fluid from an axial flow through a transmission shaft to a radial flow through a drive shaft. Exemplary flow diverters are configured to minimize erosion of transmission cables that may be present adjacent to the flow diverters.

A method facilitates transmission of electric signals across well components which move relative to each other in a wellbore environment. The method utilizes well components which are movably, e.g. rotatably, coupled to each other via one or more conductive bearings. Each conductive bearing has a conductive rolling element which enables relative movement, e.g. rotation, between the well components while simultaneously facilitating transmission of electric signals through the bearing. The method also involves coupling portions of the bearing to each of the well components, and those bearing portions may be connected with electric leads to enable flow of electric signals through the bearing during operation of the system downhole.
