A self-piercing rivet with a head and a shank which has a shank diameter (Ds), wherein, at a foot end opposite the head, the shank has an axial recess which has an axial depth (LB), wherein the axial recess has a recess volume, wherein a ratio of recess volume to volume of the shank and the head is in the range of 0.06 to 0.08.

A method of welding a weld stud to a workpiece and of checking the strength of the welded joint includes the steps of providing a tool, a workpiece, and a weld stud, the weld stud including a shank and a polygonal shaped head; welding the weld stud onto the workpiece; applying the tool to the polygonal shaped head section of the stud; applying a predetermined test torque to the weld stud with the tool; and checking the welded joint for satisfactory acceptance of the test torque.

A welding stud including a head and a shank extending from the head. The shank has an end region opposite the head and the end region includes at least two angled surfaces which incline towards an axis of the shank in a direction moving away from the head.

A welding stud includes a shank and a head flange, which projects radially relative to the shank and whose outer circumference is of polygonal design in order to be able to apply a test torque (T) to the stud by means of a tool. The flange includes an annular section () whose front facing and radially extending annular surface is designed as a welding surface. The annular section directly adjoins the flange, and the annular section and the flange form a head section which has a uniform outside diameter (D) throughout, and wherein the polygonal shape of the flange extends over the annular section up to its front annular surface.
