A wireless device for wireless communication in a wireless area network. The wireless device includes a main radio channel for exchanging data with an access point in the wireless area network, as well as an auxiliary radio channel for scanning for availability of other access points in the wireless area network.

A receiver is tuned to a first channel in a plurality of channels, and at least one beacon signal from at least one other channel is received while the receiver is tuned to the first channel. The at least one other channel is determined to be active based on the at least one beacon signal received while the receiver is tuned to the first channel. A channel that is determined to be 'active' may be, for example, a communication channel on which an access point in a communication network is communicating or is able to communicate.

A self learning roaming optimization approach allows a wireless client device to build signal strength maps that store wireless network access point signal strengths at locations along paths traveled by the wireless client device within an operational environment. The signal strengths collected at locations along a path may be analyzed to determine a recommended wireless network access point at the respective locations to achieve a reliable wireless network connection along the mapped path. The stored recommendations may take into account changes in wireless network access point signal strengths, e.g. due to obstructions and/or electromagnetic shields that may block portions of a wireless network access point signal at subsequent locations along the mapped path. A wireless client device may recognize the wireless client device's location along a previously mapped path based on the unique combination, or signature, of wireless network access point signal strengths measured at the wireless client device's location.

Method and system for selecting an access point for a client device to establish or maintain a communication connection with a wireless network

A switch includes a connector, a port, and an indicator. The connector is configured to connect via a cable to a computer. The port is attached to the connector. While the connector is connected to the computer via the cable, the port is configured to: transmit a command signal from the switch to the computer via the cable, wherein the command signal requests identification of the port; and detect a response to the command signal as received from the computer. The indicator is connected to the port. The indicator is configured to identify the port based on an alternating pattern of the response to the command signal.

Devices, systems, methods, and other embodiments associated assigning signals to cable channels are described. One example device includes a networking device that includes a transceiver to connect to a cable and communicate signal over the cable to a remote terminal. The cable can include two or more cable channels to carry signals. If a cable channel fails to operate, a switching logic reassigns signals initially carried on the failed cable channel to another cable channel.

An apparatus including: a first port configured to receive a first end of a cable to provide a communication link between (i) the first port, and (ii) a second port coupled to a second end of the cable. The apparatus further includes a processor configured to, during a time that the first end of the cable is coupled to the first port and the second end of the cable is coupled to the second port, (i) receive a command to identify the second port to which the second end of the cable is coupled, and (ii) in response to the command, repeatedly change the state of the communication link at the first port in accordance with a pattern.

The present disclosure provides for a user equipment (UE) for use in a wireless computer network that has multiple wireless access points (APs). The UE can include a wireless transceiver that communicates with the computer network, a link quality assessor that assesses the quality of the communication link between the wireless transceiver and the first selected wireless AP, a link quality forecaster that forecasts a predicted future quality of the communication link as a function of the past quality of the communication link, and an AP switching module that 1) initiates an AP link quality scan to determine a second selected AP when the forecasted link quality falls below a first link quality threshold and 2) switches to the second selected wireless AP when the forecasted link quality falls below a second link quality threshold.
