Fan clutch

A clamp-type locking mechanism has a driven element rotatably arranged with respect to a holding element and having ramps which together with a track of the holding element define clamping gaps for receiving spring-loaded clamp rollers. An adjustment element is swingable to a limited extent with respect to the driven element and provided for rotation in unison with the driven element, with the adjustment element having engagement members for moving the clamp rollers out of their clamping gaps. Located between the driven element and the holding element is a friction device for transmitting a friction moment. In order to maintain a correct friction moment during wear of the friction device, a spring mechanism is provided by which the friction device is biased with its friction surface against the holding element.

A locking element freewheel comprising an outer race ring (1) and an inner race ring (2) with cylindrical and mutually concentric locking surfaces (7,8) between which tiltably suspended locking elements (5) are guided in a cage (6) wherein the central portion of the locking surfaces (7,8) of the outer race ring (1) or inner race ring (2) has a smaller or larger diameter than the ends thereof. If, due to differing wall thicknesses, the race rings (1,2) have differing rigidity, the edge region of highest rigidity of the locking surfaces (7,8) of the outer race ring (1) and/or inner race ring (2) has a larger or smaller diameter and by such a profiling of the locking surfaces, an overloading at the edges of the locking elements is prevented.

An overrunning clutch comprising clamping rings arranged concentrially in each other with mutually facing clamping paths between which clamping elements are arranged and a switching member arranged equiaxially with one of the clamping rings which is designed to have a variable diameter, acting on this clamping ring by utilizing a wedge-surface effect so that a rotation of the switching member relative to the clamping ring with variable diameter causes a change in the distance between the clamping paths, characterized in that the clamping ring with variable diameter is divided by at least one axial slit and pre-tensioned by at least one spring to oppose the change in distance between the clamping paths which can be effected by the switching member.

Load-switching overrunning clutch

An overrunning clutch comprising a clamping ring provided with clamping ramps and spring-loaded clamping rollers housed in pockets of a cage and associated with the clamping ramps, the clutch being switchable from a first indexing position into a second by rotation of the cage with respect to the clamping ring. The cage is characterized by either directly or with the help of an intermediate member on the one hand, and the clamping ring with projections and recesses on the other, engage in each other in such a way after the fashion of a screw thread that when the cage or the intermediate member, as the case may be, is axially displaced, the cage executes a movement of rotation with respect to the clamping ring.

A cage for an overrunning clutch with a metallic outer race accommodating concentrically a metallic inner element and having in a cage arranged between the outer race and the inner element camming elements retained under the action of springs in camming contact with the surfaces of the outer race, on the one hand, and of the inner element, on the other hand, the cage being made of injection moldable or castable polymeric material and having pockets for the camming elements defined by crossbars and at least one end ring connected therewith, at least one circumferential surface of the cage cooperating in the form of a sliding bearing with a cylindrical surface of the adjacent structural part (outer race and/or inner element), characterized in that the cage (1,15,22,30,39) is provided at least in the area of the end ring (4,18,23,33,45) with an annular metallic reinforcement shield (13,19,20,26,27,34,35,47) connected to the cage (1,15,22,30,39) in a form-fitting manner especially through injection-molding around the shield and whose temperature expansion coefficient corresponds essentially to that of the outer race (5,40) and the inner element (9,41).

A one-piece sheet metal cage for an overrunning roller clutch wherein the cam rollers roll between a smooth inner races and an outer race provided with camming surfaces comprising a U-shaped sheet metal element provided in its longitudinal section with radial ends of different height, the higher end engaging the camming surfaces in a locking manner with a corresponding outer profile and the cage is provided with folding springs on radially directed segments on the cross-bars forming the cage pockets which cause the cam rollers to bear against an inner and outer retaining element of an adjacent cross-bar, each said cross-bar comprising a short segment extending in the circumferential direction at the bottom of the U-profile which forms the inner retaining elements at its axial ends adjoining the end flanges connecting the cross-bars and a flap between the inner retaining elements bent radially outward to which is secured a folding spring engaging an opening of the flap with an elastic projection, said flap being provided at its two axial ends with bent outer retaining lugs.

An overrunning clutch capable of being shifted to free wheeling in both directions and capable of being shifted to a camming position in one direction or free wheeling in opposite direction comprising an outer race provided with camming surfaces and an inner race, a plurality of cam rollers accommodated in a cage rolling on said races, a circular spring with one end secured to the outer race and the other end engaging the roller cage designed with a shift means at the latter end whereby the roller cage can be shifted from a camming position to a free wheeling position in both directions.
