A network of metal fibers includes a plurality of metal fibers fixed to one another; wherein at least some of the plurality of metal fibers have a length of 1.0 mm or more, a width of 100 μm or less and a thickness of 50 μm or less. Apparatus for producing elongate strands of metal comprises a rotatable wheel having a circumferential surface, at least one nozzle for directing a molten metal onto the circumferential surface and a collection means for collecting solidified strands of metal formed. The solidified strands are formed on the circumferential surface from the molten metal and are separated from the circumferential surface by centrifugal force generated by rotation of the wheel. The circumferential surface has a circumferentially extending structure having circumferentially extending edges and recesses formed between or bounded by the edges, and by an apparatus for controlling a gas pressure applied to the liquid metal which moves the liquid metal through the nozzle opening and delivers it to the circumferential surface of the rotatable wheel. The nozzle has a rectangular cross-section with a width of the nozzle opening in the circumferential direction of rotation of the wheel and a length transverse to the circumferential surface of the wheel which is greater than the width. A method and a wheel adapted for use in the apparatus are also claimed.

The present invention relates to an ocular device for regulating intraocular fluid pressure comprising or consisting of a tubular body wherein the inner surface of the tubular body or the inner and outer surface is/are coated with covalently immobilized hyaluronic acid (HA). In more specific embodiments, the tubular body comprises or consists of a biocompatible material selected from the group comprising a biocompatible metal such as titanium, ceramics, glass, polymers and composites thereof, and the immobilized hyaluronic acid molecules are linked with further HA molecules to form a HA hydrogel. The ocular device is a stent free from mechanical valves or other mechanical means for actively regulating the flow of intraocular fluid.

Highly ordered arrays of micelles or nanoparticles on a substrate surface and methods for producing the same

The invention relates to conical structures on substrate surfaces, in particular optical elements, to methods for the production thereof and to the use thereof, in particular in optical devices, solar cells and sensors. The conical nanostructures according to the invention are suitable in particular for providing substrate surfaces having very low light reflection. The method according to the invention for producing conical nanostructures on substrate surfaces comprises at least the steps of: a) providing a substrate surface covered with nanoparticles; b) etching the substrate surface covered with nanoparticles to a depth of at least 100 nm, wherein the nanoparticles act as an etching mask and the etching parameters are set in such a way that hyperboloid structures are produced underneath the nanoparticles; c) breaking the hyperboloid structures in the region of the smallest diameter by exerting mechanical forces, wherein the structures remaining on the substrate surface have a conical shape which corresponds substantially to half a single-shell hyperboloid.

The invention relates to a method for spatially resolving the enlargement and fine adjustment of precious metal nanoparticles according to size on a substrate surface and to the nanoparticle arrangements and nanostructured substrate surfaces thereby produced and to the use thereof. The invention particularly relates to a method for spatially resolving the enlargement of precious metal nanoparticles present on a substrate, comprising the following steps: a) providing a substrate coated by precious metal nanoparticles, b) optionally functionalizing the substrate by means of an agent which supports the adhesion of the precious metal nanoparticles to the substrate, c) contacting the substrate with a precious metal salt solution, d) UV irradiating the substrate in contact with the precious metal salt solution, thus creating a reduction of the precious metal salt and a currentless deposition of elementary precious metal on the precious metal nanoparticles and corresponding growth of the precious metal nanoparticles in the irradiated regions of the substrate, and e) optionally using a mask in order to create localized growth of the precious metal nanoparticles in predetermined regions of the substrate.

A method for creating extensive variations in size or distance in nanostructure patterns on surfaces preferably includes: a) contacting a substrate with a liquid phase containing organic two-block or multi-block copolymer micelles, which are charged with an inorganic metal compound, by immersion into this liquid phase, during which chemically different polymer domains including inorganic metal compounds enclosed in micelles are deposited on the substrate; b) withdrawing the substrate from the liquid phase at a predetermined withdrawing speed, which is varied continuously or gradually, so that a gradient of the lateral separation length of the polymer domains is produced on the substrate surface; c) converting the deposited inorganic metal compounds by an oxidation- or reduction treatment into inorganic nanoparticles and optionally complete or partial removal of the organic polymer by a plasma treatment, wherein positions and lateral separation length of the nanoparticles obtained are determined by those of deposited polymer domains.

Ultralyophobe interfaces that are substantially inert to contaminants, thereby resulting in surfaces that are hydrophobic and/or lyophobic. The substrates include a substrate surface and have a bonding layer and a plurality of flexible fibers bound to the bonding layer. The flexible fibers have an elastic modulus and an aspect ratio, wherein as the elastic modulus of the fiber increases, the aspect ratio increases such that the flexible fibers bend upon contact of a liquid surface.

Ultralyophobe interfaces

The present invention relates to a photochemical method for manufacturing nanometrically surface-decorated substrates, i.e. the creation of periodic and aperiodic patterns of highly ordered inorganic nanostructures on a substrate. This method is based on the selective photochemical modification of a self-assembled monolayer of metal compound loaded polymer core-shell systems on widely variable substrates. Light exposure through an appropriate mask causes selective chemical modification of the polymer core shell system. By subsequently placing the substrate in an appropriate chemical solution that eradicates the non-modified polymer, the pattern given by the used mask is reproduced on the surface. Finally, the remaining organic matrix is removed and metal salt is transformed to the single metal or metal oxide nanodots by means of gas plasma treatment.
