Selectable shift programs are offered to a user of the motor vehicle at an input unit for configuring the electronic transmission control unit. From the shift programs offered, the user selects individual shift programs by activation/deactivation and optionally alters shift-program parameters as desired. Based on the shift programs selected in a user-individual manner from the shift programs offered, the electronic transmission control unit is configured in a user-individual manner by signal transmission or via voice input.
