A water-soluble protein conjugate modified by saccharides is covalently bound to a carbohydrate backbone via a saccharide group. Such protein conjugates modified by saccharides can be produced in a simple way by polymerizing a vinylsaccharide and conjugating in a known way the poly(vinylsaccharide) obtained in this way with the protein, which is preferably an enzyme. The protein conjugates according to the present invention are stable over long time periods at a high enzymatic activity and also in aqueous solution and are thus particularly suitable for use in test kits.

Water-soluble proteins modified by saccharides

According to the present invention, in the first instance, new aminopolyols, which can be obtained from the disaccharides isomaltose, isomaltulose and .alpha.-D-glucopyranosyl (1.fwdarw.1)-D-fructose, are prepared. These compounds, designated as isomaltamines and having the formulae: ##STR1## as well as mixtures of the same, are produced by the reductive amination of the aforementioned saccharides by means of ammonia or hydrazine compounds in the presence of catalysts, such as Raney nickel, and hydrogen, or by means of complex metallic hydrides, such as sodium borohydride, in solution or suspension. The invention relates, furthermore, to the N-acyl derivatives of the individual isomaltamines or their mixtures as well as to the production of the N-acylates by a selective N-acylation. Depending upon the nature of the acyl radical, these acylates can be used for example, as surfactants or (similarly to N-acrylamide) for the production of polymers.

An apparatus for the production of biocatalyst beads comprises an immobilization vessel (10) which is provided at its lower end with discharge pipes (23) which extend through a pressure chamber (25) in which a gas pressure prevails. The pressure chamber (25) is terminated by a plate (24) exhibiting holes which coaxially surround the discharge pipes (23). At the lower end of the immobilization vessel (10) is provided a connecting nozzle (30) which is connected in germproof sealing manner to the wall of a collecting vessel (11) which contains a solution of a cross-linking agent or a reprecipitation bath. The collecting vessel (11) may be constructed as a fermenter and provided with an agitator. Both of the vessels may be jointly sterilized.
